I never get any work done while I'm at home due to my family always making me do stuff, they think that I'm sitting around doing absolutely nothing all day so as soon as I wake up they make me hoover, tidy up, clean, cook and everything as they believe I've got nothing better to do.

This is getting really annoying, I wish I had an office that I could go to during the day so I could get some work done!

I have that problem sometimes too...even when I'm home alone, I have an issue with focusing. Try going to a library or a starbucks...or any place with free wifi that doesn't mind you hanging out.

That's the reason a lot of entrepreneurs suggest that you get your own (shared) office space. Not everybody is able or has the discipline to work from home.

I'm assuming you still live with your parents? I moved out years ago now, but looking back now, I certainly appreciate the free rent and food I always got. You should help out around the house - just spend an hour a day helping out and they will keep off your back.

Yeah working from home is tough. You get family asking you to do things, friends that think that you can drop everything at a moments notice, and don't forget being focused. I agree with everyone else it is a good idea to go out and work somewhere else.

I made very little money working at home. Its really hard for family members to see you in the house and not ask you to do things they consider small. For example, when I started out, I was doing small stuff here and there. "Can you finish making these sandwiches really quick?" or "Can you strap Bob into the car seat while I do this or that" and 10 minute mini-chores would turn into 1 hour chores. Instead of me being able to sit down for 8 hours straight, I had to do sit down for an hour here, 2 hours here, and it became really hard to concentrate and I was having to work all through the entire day, simply to help out with things on other peoples time. But then if cash doesn't come in as much... then you are a huge asshole wasting time. Get yourself an office.

Because so many businesses are now only based online, things like small offices are so cheap right now its crazy. I remember when a good office was about $900/mo at minimum for what seems like a janitors closet, now I'm seeing them for $300/mo for multiroom offices.

yea, I think most of us are familiar with this story at one point or another, the secret is to make money, once you get that check, go to kinkos, enlarge it X10, frame it and put in the living room, that should do it.

Doing a little chore work is so much better than paying rent or just living in an apartment complex area period. I say that because like meathead said it sounds like you live with your parents.

Also, yeah.. older people tend to think of people who spend time on the computer as lazy people who do nothing. My mom was the same way when I lived at home, she absolutely hated the fact I spent most of my time on the computer because like her and the generations before her they had to spend most of their day working and not relaxing.

It happens every single generation.. people are bitter at the younger generation and just imagine in 2030 what we'll be complaining about. Hologram TVs, a lot of work from home jobs, whatever the music will evolve into.

This is a horribly selfish and snotty idea. If you were my kid and you did that because I asked you to (omg!) strap your kid brother in the car seat you'd have to have a rectal surgeon cash that check for you.

What you should do is get up earlier, like before they're up, and schedule those 2 hours or whatever for your own uninterrupted personal time.
BE QUIET too, or you'll wake up the rest of the family and shoot yourself in the foot. Practice being quiet when they're not home so you can hear exactly what noises your house makes, where to step, etc.

2 hours a day is plenty of time to get your fledgling business going in about two weeks and keep it going indefinitely. If it isn't, you're doing it wrong.

Think long term, buddy. It's great that you even have a family that can depend on you. Give them a hug and try not to be so frustrated. It all works out in the end. I promise.

I don't know exactly your situation, but if you're staying at home, it's a good idea to help your folks out around the house. Instead of waiting for them to ask you to "tidy up" or help out, let them know that you want to help, but you need time to work, too. Tell them that you're willing to set aside some time during the day to help with chores and ask what would help them most. They will recognize the fact that you are being responsible and respectful of your situation. Then, instead of being interrupted all day for random things, just get up and help out for a little while and let your family know you're going to work for a bit.

I don't live at home anymore, but when I did, I was raised to know that if you live in someone's home rent-free, you're expected to help around the house. I always did at least an hours worth of chores during the day and would spontaneously do things when I had time after work, too, and my parents never complained if I holed myself up in my room the rest of the time working on whatever strange things "kids these days" are into.

Jobs come and go, and most of us go through several in our lifetime at the very least. We only have one family, and I promise it's worth it to try and meet them halfway because they are the people that will support you whether you succeed or fail.

Man I wish I could live with my parents again. Man those were the days.

However I agree, a seperate office is very important. After 3 years my girlfriend and friends still don't understand that just because I'm home, it doesn't mean I'm available to talk or do BS tasks for them.

It's driving me crazy, I think I'd much prefer to rent my own place or office apart from I live in the middle of nowhere. I'm spending about 1 hour out of the whole day doing IM or working on my sites because 10 minutes can't pass with my brother or sister or father asking me to do something it's driving me crazy.

For some reason they think because I sit on a computer that I'm "Playing Games" or doing nothing just because thats what they do when there on a computer so they make me do trival tasks. I don't mind helping out but when I'm like a house wife its mad, why can't my unemployed sister or brother do some work for once? They make me do it even though I'm busy.

That sounds rough, I have the exact opposite problem. I tend to not be able to work out of my office. I work for a small company where everyone is more or less working on their own projects. My co-workers tend to act like your family. I love the quiet of working at home

My life changed for the better when I learned to batch my to-do's and properly manage my time. It's helpful to set a specific routine/schedule/timing for everything you'll do, and to group the activities in an advantageous way.

Example: To this day I clean the bathrooms in my house every other Sunday. I clean the bedrooms every Tuesday and Saturday, the Kitchen every other Saturday, etc.

I also have specific "work hours" for myself, even though I'm self-employed. It sounds silly, but it makes a world of difference for me.

For you, your goal might just be to maximize the time you do have to do what you need to do, even if others interrupt you. Sometimes there's nothing you can do but deal with the cards you're given! So working with what you've got will be your ticket out of a sub-optimal situation and into the one you want. :)

How old are you?

What's your income?

Solution to your 'problem' depend on these answers. If you are an adult and make money online or any other way then you can move out to be on your own and do what the hell you want. If you eat their food and they are paying the bills and you make no money from your internet ventures then perhaps you should do chores and everything else they ask you to do.
