Social Media Linkbuilding

I am just wondering if I'm thinking correctly here. I have a few questions about Social Media Linkbuilding.

For example Facebook. If I would have a Fan Page with alot of followers, regularly putting a status update with my URL in it, would it be a good link builder? And ofcourse my website being liked/shared on Facebook, would that increase the linkbuilding only once, or would it increase the value of the links significantly if it gets shared 100s of times a month?

The same with Twitter. Would a twitter account (for example Pillows) with alot of followers and regularly having the website (For example pillow.com) mentioned alot help building links. And would the message being retweeded alot build more links?

And ofcourse there is Youtube. If I have a video named Pillows on my account named Pillows and in the description it would say Pillows.com. And the video having a lot of views, lots of sharing and commenting, etc. And good keywords. Would all of this increase my position on Search Engines too?


I am just trying to understand the basics here. If anyone has some good guides (I know we have some good ones here on BHW, but of course there's a lot more to learn) about linkbuilding, social media linkbuilding, etc. please share it here. Thanks alot!

I can tell you that the vision is quite vague about this new social media link building thing. People speculate that Google has started giving those the weight it took from "content farms" as they call it. I'm not able to answer all your questions but from personal experience I can tell you that yes, your youtube video popularity brings you more rankings within the youtube search engine itself and Google. Perhaps because youtube is inhouse so Google can peak at stats from the backend they wouldn't have usually gotten access to if YouTube was a third party.

With regards to getting many links from one social network, I think that would carry pretty good weight for two reasons:

1. See wikipedia's internal linking structure? Thousands of anchored internal links pointing to each wiki page and Wikipedia ranks for almost any keyword despite the fact that occasionally some wikipages will only have INTERNAL links. Of course domain age and authority is a factor but I'm just stressing on a particular point.

2. Google is WELL AWARE that social media = many people. At the end of the day, Google wants to rank high what people WANT so if your links get shared by others even internally on facebook, I would guess that this will bring you more value because it means more users are vouching for you. The perspective of "it comes from the same IP geo location....etc" would not be a appropriate to be applied with something like facebook that has over 500 million users worldwide. So the "users" must mean something to Google not just "facebook" as in "private blog" or site that ONE PERSON or organization runs.
