Somebody correct me if I am wrong but the comment spammer is hoping that the blog is set to approve and the owner doesn't screen comments. They also hope the gibberish doesn't trigger any spam filters. Keep in mind though that a lot of the blocking by Akismet is also based on IP addresses filtered by Spamhaus so good proxies are also a must.

LOL..the people that are spamming yoru blog could care less if you approve it, and expect most to be marked as spam.For 31,000 backlinks I would imagine they are using a 5 million+ list. Sites like that use the machine gun stratgey, blast away and dont check for bodies.
