Is IM harder or easier Now when compared to 5 Years ago?

Is Internet Marketing and making money online harder or easier on 2011 when compared to 2007?

There is clearly thousands of new companies, services and methods being created every day, but nevertheless I have the feeling that things have become much more harder to achieve a full time income out of the internet, am I correct or not?

Well, looking forward to see what more experienced webmasters have to say, but even for white hat (or especially for WH, should say), looking back at sites that have started 2007, and looking at local google from my country, they had no competition, no other problems than to pick up Adsense or whatever checks/payments.

So, I'd say, much harder. Competition is 50x bigger, or at least it seems like, Google is more complex and not that easy to struggle with, end users are harder to keep happy, etc etc.

When you say they left their jobs, do you mean their real jobs or their IM jobs?

IM jobs.Its way harder to get traffic and the results of the traffic is dropping too as people are getting poorer on the whole world.Also there is way more competition from asia who needs just 1/5-1/20 of earnings which a western guy needs to survive which makes that he needs to be 5-20 times so good like them or have good amount of money to invest.

Internet marketing is just one stream of revenue. You cannot concentrate on it for your entire salary.

Albeit, some people do, but they are very lucky.

I'm currently unemployed and can't find a new job due to external circumstances.

From 0 to 10 (0 being absolutely impossible, 10 being completely achievable), how would you rate the possibility of me surviving out of an IM income, lets say $1000 a month?

It depends on the cost of living of your area. Making $1000 per month is definitely possible with internet marketing.

However, I don't know if living off of $1000 is possible. Maybe if you don't have a car payment and have a really cheap apartment.

Exactly - look at any 'normal' job...Just to interview you're up against 100s of other 'qualified canidates'. Competition will always be around - just get creative and make some money! Its very possible

My previous real job paid me $900 a month, and although it isn't much, it's enough to scrap by.

I really only one to analyze the prospect and the plausibility of making a consistent $1000 a month out of IM.

globally ,i never did myself adsense only know a few people who made a killing with adwords promoting some blackhat stuff which isnt 100% legal.
Best start is to find a really new hot product which will rock and start promoting it from the beginning.

The population of India is 1,192,572,000, they speak good English, are clever and motivated. Cost of living there is much lower than in the West.

That's where most of IM is going to be within a few years.

It depends on your skills ,experience and money you can invest.Reading your posts i guess you dont have much money you could invest so many methods wont work for you in the beginning.
You need to find a method which will work for you without investing anything else than your man power,your internet and your pc

That is fair - I only meant my comment as an encouraging statement - I've worked as a full time IM'er for over 2 years.

It can be extremely hard to make your first $1,000 online...I recall celebrating when I pulled in my 'first $50 day'! But once you find a method or niche that works for you, making it becomes a LOT easier. Its possible to do it and people do it every day.
