I am looking to rank for keywords in a smaller area * I live in the middle of nowhere*

they are local and I am looking for any advice!

\yes others have ranked for the keyword + local business on google maps

not looking or #1 per say but if i can drive traffic then

and work from there I am not so good at keyword research and SEO but i can set up websites fine and everything else

well you should pick the best 6 keywords and use them for anchors in your links. Start by doing all manual linking on every niche related site you can find. so if it's local carpet cleaning, find places that talk about appliances and carpets etc etc... do everything manual. don't waste money on auto tools. You have a long road ahead of you before then. :lever:

Local is easy to rank for, usually only on few hundred links gets you to top 3, unless your in a big city, and you said you weren't.

I have done a couple "middle of nowhere websites" for customers and with only on page seo and about 200 directory submitions and 25 profile links and optimized Places page Page 1 for top 5 keywords. I have no idea on your targets but should be reasonably easy:biggthump

Local is usually piss easy, though the way Google has been merging maps/standard search recently (at least in the UK), a maps account (with physical location and phone) is pretty important.

Try searching for your key phrases, and see if they bring up map results. If they do, and its more than one or two, then you are probably going to need a maps account to get decent traffic, especially if the results get merged as they do here.

i hate the way google does returns results like this. Half the page gets taken up with google directory entries.

On topic though; i have one of my inner pages ranked top for a local search, this was done in less than a month. i have built no direct links to this page but have links to the main page for just the main keywords. Although the actual kephrase eg "service in location" has very few searches on it.

do you have to be a buisness owner for a maps account?
I'm sure I can fake it and throw on a location but the site will be legit and relevant

Do you already have a map listing created? I'm not sure about Canada, but most (if not all) US listings must have a postcard sent out instead of verifying by phone. Keep that in mind when choosing an address for the listing.

No map listing yet, it's more for a directory/info type website for a niche of company's and want to rank for their keywords

It's all local though and domain will be local targeting only

OK, well directories dont usually feature in maps, as its not a physical location based business.
Alot of people who wanted to do the local directory approach gave up because of this.

However, i found a rather nice way to make it work!

I run local searches based on my terms, and find map results for companies that DONT have a website listed (so clicking the result takes them to the places page), preferably small one man band typo companies.

I then phone them, explain that a places page is much worse than a proper, optimized homepage (not website!) and offer them a free one IF they link it to their maps account.
Then just give them the directory listing as normal, and they link their physical address with your listing.

You now have more traffic and a competitor to leverage when selling to other companies.
If you like you can run adsense on the free listings, and offer to remove with a 'premium' listing, with a few other nominal freebies thrown in.
