Not a competitor, more likely a vested third party. Maybe a huge stockholder, or some JCP VP who got big bonus.

After SEVEN YEARS, I suddenly noticed that a whitehat site I made way-back-when was actually getting gobs of traffic with no particular efforts on my part.

I immediately slapped AdSense on it, and now it makes about $3/mo.

The same is true for a couple of other content sites I made of about the same age.

That's how it worked out for me.

Needless to say, I have no interest in making any more "great content" sites.

Article is nothing but media sensationalism. The media can't even define blackhat and the big G has no way to decipher the mass amounts of seemingly legit links blackhat programs drop (ie xrumer).

Internet marketing has become too competitive that you cannot just rely on your whitehat sites to succeed. You still need to employ various blackhat techniques to make sure those sites of yours bring money home. The real key to success is being able to perfectly cover your tracks. Remain invisible to the main search engines while you are visibly making money.
