While looking for new ways to promote my movie sites on here, I felt like I should contribute something.
I have made 100K for the past 2 years with just my movie sites and I see many people struggling to make a few bucks. If this has been covered else where sorry I haven't seen it.
I started with two sites one focusing on S.E.O. only and one only promoted with links.
The S.E.O. site did take a little bit to get going I started with the longer terms "watch X movie online" "watch X movie free online". I focused on those for a month or two and kept building out content. I did not use a wordpress theme or any other script, it was all just basic HTML. Making sure to fill in all the Alt Img fields all meta tags on all pages. After the site aged a bit. I started work with Rankpay.com I did this mostly because I was poor. With rankpay you dont have to pay until you rank, which is great when you are broke, and at the time I was beyond broke and couldn't afford any other type of SEO. I picked terms that I thought I could rank with, and I took a bit of a risk by picking about 15, if I had ranked for all of them in the top 3 I would have owed a huge bill (but would have made tons of money) After about 3-6 months the site started having steady 5k-10k traffic and decent rev. it would then start to slide and I tried to pick new terms but it just kept sliding. I then started looking at google and the auto-complete terms. For example when you start typing watch movie it will fill in watch movies online or something of the sort. After matching my keywords more closely with the auto-complete I found that nice steady traffic and it has stayed since.
The promotion site was a bit more difficult and still is. I like to try alot of different methods and just see what sticks. At first all I needed was uploading videos to youtube with a link in the description, first manually, then paying outsourced workers. This worked really well for a long time, but as it became more popular to do, the harder it got. I then started spreading things out and using dailymotion, rediff, and sevenload, which helped. Then because of this forum I started using cpa blaster (there is a thread about it on here somewhere) and for youtube it is an awesome tool. If you use it at all it will pay for itself in no time. If you go the tv route and use wordpress it is a must have. Just to make things extra clear I use windows movie maker and take two images one saying "watch x movie and blahblah.com" or "youtube won't allow this video use the link in the description" and then another image of the movie or tv show. I like to pull the description from high ranking other youtube videos or pull some of the info and then add more. Same with tags and title, it's similar to SEO find people who are successful and copy them and then do it better. The more you upload the better, until you run out of accounts. Then its time to use what you have learned to make good videos with good descriptions and titles. You can also watermark trailers of the movie. I use Keepvid to pull the videos off youtube.
Monetizing both of these site has been probably the most interesting part, I know everyone used Cpal33d back in the day, and so did I but it never made me as much as Pinball (zango). They have gone through alot with the company being sold and ups and downs. Overall they have been the best performer, I have tried loud-mo and they started out really strong and them my earnings tanked with no traffic change. They didn't seem to have any answers about why and they did pay on time, but just didn't seem trustworthy. They have changed to a rev sharing model and the few tests I have run were promising. If you love the surveys I have found leadbolt and dollarade are both pretty decent and will work with movie sites. They just never make as much for me, I know more people use them but I just don't see the results on the best day they are just ok.
What I actually do now, is not any sort of content blocker, I just use two things graboid for a "download now" button (which is a solid program that is consistent) and an animated gif of a video player that links to pinball for a download. It's works well if you have on your site all the movies or shows you think people will want. if you have crap content you will get crap results and should use a content blocker on the front page.
