Greyhat Method Journal (8 months in) RESULTS

Thanks for all your helpful answers. I have a question about how you choose your keywords. You said you choose only ones with a growing trend.

Let's take "spyware removal" for example.

Code:
http://www.google.com/trends?q=spyware+removal&ctab=0&geo=us&geor=all&date=all&sort=0

This looks like it's falling and losing popularity, but according to google's keyword tool, there's 22,000 exact searches a month for it.

By your definition of "growing trend", wouldn't you end up excluding keywords like spyware removal and missing out on all the search traffic for it?

good question and yes the keyword phrase "spyware removal" has declined over the years, aside from the spike earlier this year, so I would exclude it from my list. It may have 22k searches a month but with the search decline coupled with the fact that competition has most likely grown as more people get into internet marketing each year and more business' sell products online don't you think it will be harder than ever to get some of that search traffic?

This is why # searches a month for keywords is not a good place to start. I would only use this info for the sake of my domain name. Other than that it doesnt matter. A KW could have 5M searches a month and you better believe there will be a relative amount of competion to go along with it. As more and more people go online each year we can only assume competion is constantly growing so why bother with a KW that loses popularity over the years? It's not like competition is evenly being cut along side it.

lets look at these KW phrases instead:

"spyware help":
http://www.google.com/trends?q=spyware+help&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all&sort=0

although stagnant for 2007 activity has picked up since 08. I would use this one.

"spyware fix":
http://www.google.com/trends?q=spyware+fix&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all&sort=0

Before 07 we saw the odd spike since 07 steady activity. Although it is declining the fact that there is regularly activity after alot of stagnant periods I would probably still use this one.

and finally "spyware solution":

http://www.google.com/trends?q=spyware+solution&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all&sort=0

All of a sudden this phrase is on google trends radar this year. Thats exciting. Could be the start of something hot.

a few quick examples of KW/Phrases you might want to pick up in place of spyware removal.

Thank you for your question and good luck :)

Was going to update this journal last month but have been busy. sorry.

Anyway heres my traffic growth to my WP site from 2010:

gtrendstechnique.jpg

thats right I pretty much went from practically no traffic to 40K plus UVs a month in a year but I'm not satisfied until I can REPEAT this success...

that's where 2011 comes in :D

I'm a bit behind in my keyword list generating as only 2 of my lists are done (I'm planning on building 3 sites this year all with a seperate KW list).

so what's the goal?

If I can't repeat this kind of traffic growth with at least 1 site then I do not consider this method valid. So basically 2011 will be the "year of truth".

PLAN OUTLINE:

Build 3 WP sites each with a radically different niche.

SITE #1

Niche: ???
Social Media Platforms: Twitter, YT, FB
Keyword List Size: Currently 7K+

SITE #2

Niche: ???
Social Media Platforms: Twitter, YT, FB
Keyword List Size: (unfinished)*

SITE #3

Niche: Video Games (PC and Consoles). I will focus on a previews and reviews. Original content unless I havent played the game then I will rewrite content myself. no outsourcing. my keyword technique requires me to be hands on as its too intricate to try an "teach" someone how to write precisely in a way that utilizes my KWs in the best possible way.(already had problems with this in the past).
Social Media Platforms: Twitter, YT, FB
Keyword List Size: 4K+

* I am slightly behind with site 2 as the list isnt finished yet but should be by the end of this month. Site 1 and 3 are already online.

As you can see I revealed one of my niches in the 3rd site so if anyone also shares this niche they might find the info useful.

GOAL:

Repeat the success I have had from my first site using my original google trends strategy that I outline in my first post.

If this cannot be duplicated then I will consider this method a failure and atribute it to "luck" (eww I hate the concept of 'luck').

This year should be exciting :D

The next major update to this journal will probably be 4-6 months from now.

If you have any questions please ask them here. DO NOT PM me I will NOT respond. This is a PUBLIC journal so please ask here or if you have some information you would like to contribute please post here.

Also, on a side note, I am curious if anyone has tried this technique yet (this post is almost half a year old and I would love to hear any input you might have if you tried this method. remember I'm learning too ;)).

Thank you and good luck!

how do social media platform?

thank you very much.

There are sections here that discuss getting traffic through social media. Check out the social networking section and the Youtube section. It's really not that hard and if you need specific ask there.

Thanks for sharing!
One more time, it seems that content was the only key to be number one. A quick review of certain keywords is clear for me:
1st: realy simple article (500 words) with PR2, and 100's backlinks
2nd: title and "bite my thing" content with PR5 and 115000 !!! backlinks

My question is: isn't G just noticing that you're providing good stuff on a subject and is rewarding you for that?
I haven't seen your stats but i'm pretty sure your bounce rate is VERY low.
The moderate number of pages viewed is over 2. That means, considering the people reading you often and having already read your past content that the new visitors do really enjoy the site.

And what if the SERP were the result of your success, and not the opposite?

Anyway keep it up, I'm pretty excited to know more.

Cheers

thank you for your time. however I am confusing.

please to explain keywords in article. do keyword get the traffic? if it is so how to get keyword.

I am look for one instruct. I can pay money for the lesson. If you show me I pay money to you. please teach.

thank you

Thanks for the reply.
I have a few questions I forgot to ask you about your front page:
- Do you display 5-10 full articles on it, or just excerpts?
- Do you propose a speech telling what it's all about?
- What are the keywords that lead people to it, are they different than for the articles?
Thanks again!

KeyzDT,
You provided some good information about building an authority site. It seems like you primary focus is content. A few quick questions if you don't mind.

Have you created any type of link bait for you users?
Have you found any programs that will take a list of keywords and extract the data from Google Trends? Like you, I have researched a lot of keywords and it does takes forever.

Thanks and best of luck to you.

So how many articles per website is enough? If you are going for a medium competitive keyword? Thanks.

No link bank that has been intentional but some of my original content must be interesting enough as I have links on other peoples sites. Last time I checked I have over 70 backlinks. Not a lot but they are all natural and on some high PR sites.

The program you speak of would be PERFECT if one exists. Up until now I have done everything manually and it takes a LOT of time.

just remember 3 rulese

good content (it helps to be interested in your niche so you can actuall contribute your experience or at least want to learn to write about it)

keyword research with G trends.

Social Media - its free and its the most attractive thing on the net to most people right now.

tough to say. I do as many as time permits now sometimes 5- 10 a week. Sometimes more sometimes less. Just keep adding them and see what happens. It can only equal MORE traffic.

I have to say not a huge fan of the journal type threads but have to admit yours was worth reading. Its always nice to read stuff from members who do things a little bit different from the norm as it can always spark ideas of your own, great stuff, look forward to watching for updates, and don't forget your friends here when you get to grad school and get that .edu blog, LOL

Yeah most journal threads fail because its day by day. What could you possibly accomplish in a day thats worth reading hahaha?

second, I believe in this method because its mostly white hat so it has long term potential. I plan on working on this journal until I graduate.

I'll save a link spot on the .edu blog for you hahaha.:44:

To the OP,
I think I can help you out with Google Trends. I can write a bit of PHP to run through a list of KW's and fetch back the graphs shown on Google Trends. Please PM me if interested.

It is a nice idea. I might have one made if it's possible depending upon the cost. Out of curiosity, are you using standard WP themes or are they custom? Have you used any plugins to help with the SERPS?

I use standard themes. I have had bad luck with plugins in the past so I am very careful about installing them. There are a bunch of open source ones that are free but unfortunetly that means that alot of the time there also buggy as hell and can F'up your site.

hey keyz, thanks for keeping us updated here. Your method is insanely good. I completely forgot about this thread for a while, but glad to see you still posting in here because it's definitely something I'm interested in implementing for my content strategy.

Got some more questions for you if you don't mind :D

Do you ever look at the competition of your keywords and whether you can rank or not? Or is it purely gathering keywords that are growers from Google Trends?

Are you still making $1400+ with adsense? Btw if you autolink your keywords to affiliate products, you could probably do a lot better than just with adsense.

And how broad is your site? Would you create a site around a large category like Finance, or narrow it down to insurance or mortgage or debt repair.
