How do you surpass another micro niche site that's ranking higher?

I'm currently ranked #10 on the first page of the SERPs for my main keyword. It appears that the #2 spot is basically another micro niche site that's older/has more backlinks, but not too competitive. i know that in a few weeks I could build more links and surpass spot #2, but once he/she sees that my site is ranking above theirs, can they do anything to sabotage my site?

What would you recommend? I don't want to get banned by G because that person clicks on my ads a bunch of times to get rid of me... any thoughts?

No they cannot really do anything to sabotage your site. Just keep building back links and eventually you will outrank him if he isn't working on his site. Google protects itself against fraudulent clicks.

Thanks! But nobody ever posts links to their site on this forum because they don't want anyone to spam clicks on their adsense ads and get banned... can't my competition potentially do this to me if he see's me as a threat?

Don't worry, someone clicking ads on your site over and over wont get you banned I think it discounts clicks after the first one for some period of time.

Keep building links and links to your deep pages, don't focus only on the homepage. There isn't anything anyone can do to sabotage your website in google rankings.

Don't worry. I had some similar experience as you. As the the above posters mentioned its all about building good quality links consistently. Just don't worry too much about this one site of yours. Just continue to build more micro niche sites : )

You could find a different site your top competitor has an adsense banner on, then click bomb THAT. That way, when this person tries to figure out who did it to them, they'll be looking at the other sites below them for that other keyword.

thanks everyone! my site currently online has two pages and it's ranking pretty well.. i'm thinking of just making it a regular niche site by adding more content. is it possible to maintain the top spots without adding new content?
