It seems that if you haven't changed your Amazon password in awhile and it's more than eight characters, anything after the first eight characters doesn't matter so much. For example, if your password was password1234567890, someone could enter passwordpizza and get into your account all the same. It seems this problem is only with passwords that are a couple of years old and it can easily be fixed by just setting a new password.
