First off, this method of getting a domain name for "free" has been around for quite a while and second off, just to let you guys know, theres no such thing as a free lunch. Dont be fooled by this trick register.com tries to get exploitable people into. With the link, the domain is only free for one year, and after that, the renewal cost forever thereforth would be a whooping $35 bucks per year - for the domain name and also each additional one you might register with them. Thats almost 5 times as much as it would cost at godaddy registering .coms using the usual $3 off code. And if you just register the domain and try to flip it by selling somewhere like at DP, no one would want to buy because they would know its registered at register.com and that register charges pretty much the highest amounts for their services on the net.
And the special offer is only valid 1 per customer/business so you would only be able to get 1 domain anyway - unless you go fraudy with vccs and buy useing different entities - whereas you wouldnt actually be owning the domain names, thus I wouldnt see a point in doing that...

@ WhiteAl: I bought last year some names at register.com and was able to transfer them out. Not the smoothest transfer ever, but it worked ok. I had to call, that's it.

Yes, no charge. They do this because they expect that some people will not want to transfer out - remember this offer is intended for businesses.

They pay a bit more than $6 for a domain to Verisign, so even if out of 3 domains two will expire or transferred out, it is still worth them.

But I did not register any domain using this. I haet to call them to transfer out names.
