How do you add MORE keywords to your website?

Hey Guys,

I have a quick question:

I have a website that is #1 in google for a few keywords, the site is doing amazingly, it brings in over $1,500 every month.

There are 5 keywords that I am ranked pages 2-4 for that if I can get in the top three positions will quadruple my sales.

I'm trying to figure out the best way to target these keywords, because in my initial setup i targeted a few specific ones.

My thinking is:

- Make a new page targeting new keywords
- Write new content for the new keywords
- Backlink with anchor text to new page with new keywords

Is that all you really have to do? Or is there something more involved. Ideally i would like the main domain to rank for the keywords so does that mean i need to put the new content on the home page?

There are two ways for targeting more keywords.

1. Create a page per keyphrase. Find out all variations for that keyword including nested long-tail keyphrases and related terms.
2. Add keywords to an existent page.

The first option has the main advantage of relevance in content as you may put many variations in the <title> tag. This is recommended when you are talking about a single topic. However, it has its disadvantage: You may start from scratch the promotion process for that new page.

The second option has the main advantage of being in a page already ranked so if the page has enough authority the keyword may be shown pretty quickly in search results without need of much back-linking effort. The disadvantage for this method is the user experience. Your visitors may land in a page with mixed content and may get frustrated an go away. For example if your site is well ranked for "acne treatment" and you want to add the keyphrase "lip sticks" your visitors may get confused and go away as they might not find what they are looking for. In addition, some people have reported they have lost rankings for the main keywords. Not happened to me.

What if the new keyword is a variation of the #1 ranked keyword.

For example, say you were #1 for "buy black skateboard" but now you wanted to be #1 for "black skateboard" as well.

Obviously the latter has more competition, but the keyword itself is used within the main domain.

Is this just a send more anchor text situation?

I would name some of the images with various keywords, and use alt tags with them. Definitely use variety for the anchor when creating backlinks.

In this case you are already going for that keyword. "buy black skateboard" is a nested keyword from "black skateboard" so if that is the case, go for backlinks targeting "black skateboard" using exact matching in anchor text. I strongly recommend contextual links in unique content from pages with good backlinks links for better results.
