Link Exchange: Still good?

Hi,
In the last days I made some manual comments on high PR blogs (domain PR).
Now, to be honest, I've neither the time nor the inclination to continue with this.
My first idea was link exchange - is it still worth it?
Google knows for sure these simple things but how is it ranking in reality?

My traffic has been growing by 10% + from each good link exchange (wp trackback pings)... so I say if its related links and content then go for it.

Umm related would be a bit complicated because most of related websites are my competition.
I think more about link exchange for trust and improving my serp.

According to the guy that wrote Xfactor 2, the best links you can get are links from authority sites that are ranking in top 20 for the keyword you want to rank for.

I.e if you want to rank for "noob", then the best links you can get are links from one of the 20 websites that show up in google when you type in "noob".

Those types of links are worth probably 1000 times stronger than normal links.

You can get those links by asking those websites if you can write a quality article for them no a subject that is similar to what they all ready have on their sites.

You can try to contact the lesser "authoritative" sites and go for similar sites that are like yours.... a bit new on the blog (who knows one day they could become giants).

But right of the head, I don't know how much it will improve on your rank or trust in googles eyes, but I guess it would have some benefits.

Basically no, link exchanges typically arent worth it. Google devalues reciprocal links, so exchanging with only one person won't do much good. The only way to pull it off is to join a group with like hundreds of people and all exchange randomly so that there's no way for Google to tell it was artificial. One program I know of is Automatic Backlinks, which is free to join and basically accomplishes this. But overall, I'd say that your time is much better spent using other various methods of link building.

what exactly do you mean by this? wordpress trackbacks are nofollow by default so they usually wont help you at all. even if you somehow found some valuable blogs that do offer do follow trackbacks, the only way to get a trackback is to link to the blog which means the trackback is creating reciprocal links, making them devalued. why would trackbacks give you any benefit in the SERPS?

I am not sure about the SEO effect, all I know is I approve the good trackbacks and my traffic has been increasing dramatically ever since

Not too bothered about SEO... as I am not tracking the SEO for that site... (its a auto blog) and not really focused niche. I just update with like 10-20 articles per day.

You are absolutely right. I have noticed result of this technique. One more thing i would like to share here, if you get comment links back, it is more valuable for the google and give much push up to SERPs..

I think link exchanges are good if you get relevant links. You are both linking to different pages and google likes you to link to relevant sites. The problem is that you get loads of requests from shitty .info sites and very few relevant ones that are good. Plus people tend to delete the links to make them one way. So basically it is a was of time unless done manually.

Manually it is great but too time consuming. I prefer to search for the top sites that are relevant and place a manual quality comment with subtle link back.

I have recently started linking out to the number one page for the keyword too which seems to really help. I think that link out is worth more than any inbound SB or XR blast, or any other links that aren't high pr and relevant.

A few link swaps with relevant pages help. If you have a link profile of mainly link swaps with non relevant you wont achieve much.

If you can get loads of one way by doing three way linking it can help. Ideally you need more than one site in the world of seo to help.
