I started a site for my client and promised to get this website ranked on page 1.

After 6 - 8 weeks of work, it has finally reached position 7 on the first page of G. I was excited thinking about the $$$ I am going to make but G is NOT sending me any visitors from the keyword!

I checked G keyword tool and it shows the keyword has 18,000 monthly searches globally. I rechecked my position on various online tools and confirmed to be positioned 4 - 8.

But why no visitors? Anyone can enlighten me and help me earn my $$$ from the client? Thank you.

Possible explanations:

1. People are down and out due to holiday celebrations
2. Your title & meta description sucks ass
3. Google lies

Alos, i think another possibility of giving you false data...are you signed into a google account when checking your keywords...???

I don't see how 2 is related to my website ranking on G but not getting visitors.

No I wasn't and checked again on keyword tool. It is showing 18,000 monthly searches.

I have also had this problem, looks like traffic should be there ranked well, but no love from google.

Made me question google tool long ago - but all other tools use google to get this data - I think

Did you use broad match search for the keyword? Try using "phrase match" or [exact match]. This will give you a better picture of how many searches there are per month.

I think this is pretty common, especially in a geo-tarted search term. I have always felt the search volumes are either downright wrong or highly inflated.

You can imagine that every plumber (for example) who is on the first 2 pages of G is probably checking the SERPS 4 times a day... that probably accounts for 2-3K of the volume right there that you're not going to get a click from.

IMO, disappointment is the norm when you reach the first page for many geo-targeted keywords...

Hmmm.. i rank #1 in 2 keywords (singular and plural for the same phrase, ie. blue widget and blue widgets) with a combined number of 50k monthly searches and yet i only get 5k monthly clicks from there. It could be worse for a site ranked 4-8.

Check if its 18000 exact match searches or 18000 broad searches. I made that mistake once

Phrase shows 2900 searches a month while exact shows 880. Is that good? Damn after months of doing this I feel like a noob now.

I have a client in a niche that has almost identical numbers that you have... he ranks #1... above the GP results and he gets about 6 visits per day. Unfortunately that is reality!

He is actually happy with that though, because it brings him 2-3 customer a month and that's all he needs to make this very successful for him.

I have a site ranked at #1 position for a keyword that the keyword tool says it gets 4400 exact searches a month. I'm getting about 3 visitors a day to that page.

I honestly don't trust the keyword tool anymore. And no my Title does not suck ass.

880 exact match/month is not much. That would probably mean maybe 10 visits per month to your site if you are ranked less than 6th.

The other thing you should check, especially if you are getting 0 visits per month is whether your analytics are set up correctly. I have sites that are in mediocre niches (about as bad as yours or worse) with no work done to them, just tossed up a domain and they at least get a couple people a month. If there are NO visitors, then the analytics are probably messed up.

Exact match of only 880? Then I would not expect much visitors even if you are ranking #1. Much much less if you are ranking from 5-8.

As a comparison, I have a site rank #1 in Google for an exact match keyword phrase of 3600 searches per month. It averages around 10 - 20 visitors coming from that keyword.

Hope this helps. :)

When you identified the keyword, did you look for the exact word of phrase? You can rank number one for a word, but still be very low on the actual phrase that people are searching. I have a high rank for "while pregnant" but no traffic because it is just part of the entire phrase that people search.

Hmm... okay. So it seems that G has us all fooled and I am not going to get my $$$ anytime soon. Any better tool to look for good keywords?

Hi Bellkong,
What is your position in 1st page , this is also depends. If you can catch your major keyword in 1 to 5th position , you can expect your result, otherwise no .. Keep it your best.
