Moved servers and IP traffic down 30-50%

This is bullshit, Matt Cutts G00gles chief fudge czar said it makes no difference, well I have moved two sites, and both currently are down between 30-50% since moving hosts (dedicated server) from a shared server. I will continue to monitor the traffic, but so far he's talking out his ass. From this it is obvious G00gle looks at IP addresses and possibly name servers, as both have changed. So at least one part of their algo is IP.

Are these new/clean IP's? Are you perhaps in a bad IP neighborhood?

Have you examined your crawl speed? How responsive is your site on the new server?

Many people don't realize this but if your site is slow and unresponsive, it can drop in rankings.

How long was the site down during the transfer?

Have you tried out the site: in google to see if some pages are deindexed, because, Google is pretty quick to deindex when site goes down! I have experienced it myself!

Can you please update us, just wondering how your site is holding up in terms of rankings/traffic? Maybe its to early to tell.

I am about to move a handful of websites to new hosting company and hope this doesn't happen to them.

@extremephp the site did have some downtime due to hostgator fricking cutting me off due to using too many resources, during that period I moved it off pronto to LW dedicated, I was planning to do this a while back. I couldn't keep having HG cutting me off not when the site makes couple hundred a day. The indexing rate using site: (although unreliable) looks pretty stable the urls etc are all the same.

@bizhobby that maybe true I was using Google DNS for a while and it showed some sites up for me that were in fact down. The old server is still running, but with different sites, the DNS has changed to new host on selected sites that I moved.

@drivetime123 traffic is still down. A typical day would be about 5.5K UV per day, now its at 3.5k on a dedicated. I will continue to monitor it. The other site was averaging 4k per day now its 2.5k

Number of possible negative variables: slight down time, server IP changed, nameservers changed

positive variables: fast dedicated box 8GB ram dual core.

So far traffic has dropped off a lot since moving, so Matt Cutt5 is lying (again). My estimations would be it will take one month to get back to normal traffic levels. What he should say is yes we look at IP's and so when you move our datacentres have to recalculate or that world wide dns changes will affect, instead of the same rhetoric he comes out with grr

I checked awstats on old server, still getting a lot of hits, i added a redirect but still it is getting hits, any ideas? DNS but still?

sounds like a dns issue. did your name servers change as well?

is your server IP located in different country from before?

No it's the same US, the old server still has some sites on it. Name servers changed yes so did IP. Traffic still down week later.

I believe its the DNS. Matt loves to say shit that technically is true. What a douche bag. Changing Ips may make no difference but changing anything at your domain register they re-evaluate your site.

I believe it's DNS issue since your old server getting lots of hits... dns is not resolved and I am facing same problem with 2 of my sites after moving them from shared hosting to dedicated hosting...

I moved other sites also but only these 2 sites are facing problem... For these 2 domains I had created custom host (custom nameserver)... It's more then 1 month after moving out... I haven't deleted site from old host and I still see hits on my last hosting... When I checked who.is.. it's showing my new nameserver and below that it's also showing my old host... I even contacted godaddy because I deleted entries from my domain control panel but still who.is showing both...

90% of my traffic is coming to my new server but 10% still going to old host...

You facing some how similar situation so check your dns or related stuff and get it solved asap... For other sites where I didn't create custom host like these 2 domains didn't see any traffic loss (roughly 15 diff sites with good traffic) so you should not loose traffic just because of changing server or IP...

Well the only thing you can do is set TTL to a low number when you are about to move servers. I also have a custom nameserver now. DNS propagation should only take a few days max worldwide?
