When private reg expires, does the owner become WHOIS-able?

Quick question: There are several private registration domain names that I'm not going to renew. Is it true that as soon as they expire, all my contact information pops up on WHOIS?

Yikes! That sucks.

So when you sign up for a private domain you're also agreeing to pay for it until the end of time to keep it private. Great! NOT! :17:

I wonder how many people who shell out the extra $$$ to go private know that it's just going to come out later anyway!

it is quite possible, thats why i register domains only with registrars who offer domains with free privacy. every tried internet.bs? cheapest and best around

No it does not I have expired domains and the whois privacy is still showing.

when your privacy subscription expires, your WHOIS information will show up. so you actually have 2 subscriptions, one for the domain and the other one for the privacy.

in Moniker, the privacy subscription is called a "subproduct" and moniker would also alert you if a subproduct is going to expire in the next 30 days.

Godaddy, Moniker, Name and other registrars will always show your WHOIS information as soon as your privacy subscription expires.

I just checked one of my recently expired domains from namecheap and its my whois privacy showing, just a changed dns (obviously lol)

Refering to the post above mine, I got whois privacy the day I bought the domain and its still showing privacy after the domain expired. Both being over 1 year old now.

OK, my head is still spinning here and I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, so bear with me if you don't mind.

I have like 80 domain names I'm not going to use. I'm tired of paying for them to do nothing. They're all private (paid) and coming up for renewal in January. If I let them all go, at a later date are all 80 going to show my contact info?

I would suspect it is a matter of timing. With namecheap, I believe it does take a week or two for the whois data to become publicly visible. So I think it works in case you ordered privacy a bit later than the domain was registered, covering the data for the period of drop proceedings. And after that, the data will show it as not registered.

However, you seem to have bought the domains at the same time with the privacy service. So if it is very important for you to keep your anonymity, I would only extend the privacy service now, and not the domains. That might do the trick. With Namecheap it's around $7 per 5 names, so 80 domains goes for about $112, and once you et them drop, you can use the service on your remaining domains.

For the gap on protection of the other domains, just change their registrant info for the time being, by replacing your name with someone else's. Which makes it somewhat cumbersome. So maybe spending $112 is your best option?
