How Do You Rank In Foreign Countries?

The title pretty much says it all. How exactly do you rank in search engines in foreign countries?

Is there a certain way to get backlinks? Do you have to get a special domain extension for that country? I really have no idea.

Any information would be useful. Thanks!

I use the same techniques that are used to rank in USA ... the problem is that its harder to find places to post your backlinks ...

I use the same techniques as on English sites. It often helps while commenting blogs, because I use my keyword as Name and English readers may think that's a real name. Also try to get links from your country sites, I think every country has it's blogs, social bookmarking sites, article directories and website directories.

As well as the domain extension, its a good idea to HOST your site with a company based in the country you are targetting (e.g. if you are targetting Google.fr then use a French hosting company).

The reason being, Google (apparently) also takes the IP address of your website into account.

Hosting on country specific IP may not be taken into account. As many site are ranking internationally on the first page of google from various countries.

I strongly believe a highly logical way to rank locally would be to choose your links.

Search for blogs, directories and another arenas were you can plant link to your page.

I believe google uses a very simple algorithm to make decisions, so just imagine this....

if you were google and you saw 103 links from the "Netherlands" pointing to a blog hosted in South-Africa which is s.e.o'd for the keyword - local ranking"

What would you do if someone searches for "local ranking" from "google.sa"

Would you pull a page with over 100 links from S.A hosted sites or do something "stupid" You must also take into account your anchor text when linking from country specific ip' it is the key ingredient that make it even more clear to the big G - what does links are actually meant for....

getting a country specific domain is the best.Apart from that,optimize the web page titles to target specific countries and needless to say,make links that target such phrases.

Just imagine that instead of optimizing for local listings you optimize for a specific country. You still need a lot of back links from that area (e.g. in this case from that country), also you have to tell Google that you are targeting the area (country). It is simple and logical

Okay cool guys thanks for the info. So I'm thinking I should just get the country extension and build backlinks from the specific country sites. So like someone said, if I'm promoting a website in France then I should build backlinks from a French website, which I suppose would be easiest to find if the text is in French right?

Also, how would I go about finding keyword competition for a specific country? Like if I change my Google to Google.fr would I be seeing everything they see over in France?

TLD that is from that country, usually buy a site from that extension for easy backlinks.

if you wanna find some thing for any foriegn country then you can find it simply like if you are in usa and wants to search for uk from google
then use google.co.uk
for india search from google.co.in

I highly doubt thats what anyone here was looking for

I rank for several sites in .DE and all i did was set it to "germany" in Google web MT.

I have primarily ranked non US domains and I use hostgator. Fortunately it has never been an issue as I would hate to have to use expensive local hosting.

this is bullshit, I have most my servers in US for EU sites and this is not a problem, there is no boundaries for internet, G consider siete geolocation by domain extension and by sources of BL.

It's almost entirely content. Relevance of backlinks helps, but obviously if you're trying to rank for a french phrase, the relevant backlinks will be in french. Spamming, you don't care about relevance anyway. TLD *MIGHT* help slightly, but it's not proven and it doesn't make sense to me that it would.

I've destroyed american serps with nothing but some ******** links from japan - some with english anchor text and some without.
