Link Building problems

Hello all,
I have been working on building my back links to my site and I have come across a very strange occurrence that I am hoping someone here can explain.

Google lists my site as having 1 back link.
Yahoo lists my site as having 3,323 back links.
Altavista lists my site as having 599 back links.

Any thought as to why Google has scrapped all my back links?

I find this strange because I have a lot of pages listed in Google.
Google has 2,070 indexed pages
Yahoo has 87 indexed pages
Altavista has 648 indexed pages
Bing has 109 indexed pages.

Any help in this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Yahoo, Google etc list whatever they want and whenever they want. Yahoo has changed the numbers of backlinks that appear 10 times during the last months. Google webmaster tools is inconsistent with reality too.

The only thing that you should pay attention is ranking. Do you rank ?If yes, move on to the next project.If not work further. Numbers that appear on yahoo, google etc are just numbers. Your backlinks will eventually appear on yahoo site explorer but this wont happen in one week or on in month (they might though).

You can try to index your backlinks and by searching this forum, you will find tons of ways but i dont do it (its just my opinion).

Yes i know how inconsistent the Google Webmaster tool is. However this is not using that tool, it is using a search query to find the back links.

I am not here for a short haul with this site. I have built this site in the past months to go from extremely low traffic to more than 40K hits from google alone last month.

Any other advise would be greatly appreciated.

Are you building links with certain anchor text you want to rank for or just very generic? If you traffic is not dropping why bother with the number of links. As mentioned higher up - work on the rankings for specific keywords instead.

Google will always display a lot less links than Yahoo and Altavista. Google isn't really a good source to view backlinks at all unfortunately. Stick with Yahoo, it's the best source for viewing backlinks. Keep in mind even Yahoo doesn't display all of your links either.

I dont know how google works but an assumption you make is that search engines will show all your backlinks or in other words all your backlinks will be indexed.

A profile with 2 words linking to a website does not add any value to any user. Now imagine 1000 replications of this profile. Why would they make them appear in the search engines.
Can you imagine the mess if google results had included all the backlinks of the world? OMG spam!

Appearing in search engines is different from knowing it exists.

A profile with 2 words linking to a website does not add any value to any user. Now imagine 1000 replications of this profile. Why would they make them appear in the search engines.

This is a good explanation bakxos. Thanks for that. I do know that not all my links will show, but when all of them vanish? even relevant links? what ever, I am not overly concerned because my click through rate just sky rocketed once again in my fourth month of having this site rocking so the ranking part is no concern of mine

If anyone has thoughts on this matter as well please let me know. I love gaining more information in any thing I can so I can then take that learned data and utilize it well

From experience, the number of backlinks reported isn't really Gospel truth.

As some others have said, the only think that matters is your SERP. As long as you rank where you like to be, then what ever you're doing is working. Otherwise, continue to try other methods and only use the backlink count as a guide.

and don't forget to vary your anchor text! this will let the backlins appear more natural to google as if all have the same keyword in anchor!

Google is going through some really heavy changes, killing enormous numbers of backlinks as part of their new algorithm(s). But they're not just zapping them at random; there's method to their method even if people haven't figured out exactly how it functions.

However, on a note of advice:

1) use a utility to show you the links that Google is still listing;

2) Do a quick mental comparison to the nature of those links against all the links that were recently killed;

3) Focus your future link building on the types of links that Google still recognized.
