I'm looking for advice and to share thoughts about the whole
problem of negative postings about a client.

For example - lets see I do a search for "ABC Widgets" and on page
1 of Google we get a link to a very negative posting or a link to a review site which has a negative listing.

How do I get these links to either drop to page 2 or 10
or to get them off completely.

Reverse SEO !!

I guess I could start by link spamming the negative link
so that there are so many postings out there and backlinks that
Google sees it and it drops. Would that work?

Any other bright BH ideas would be very welcome. I guess I could also do WH and put lots of postive posts but I need some BH ideas

Thanks guys (and gals)

Spamming the site won't work, you need to create "chaff." Create new pages for that keyword that will outrank the negative review. Start by pinging statistics sites by the thousands, followed it up with autoblogs and mass video uploads.

That's risky, you may end up boosting the ranking of the negative review page or site!

Also it's not required because G00gle already tweaked their algorithm. Check this

well...in a review type of situation, recruit some folks to give negative reviews. this doesnt move the site but reviews are one way. if yu are getting bad reviews, and the problem is correctable, correct it. then get some folks to give good reviews.

I'm all about the 'chaff' approach Jenni mentioned. Trying to drive them down with links/bad links is playing with fire because one algorithm tweak or mistake and they could be pegged at #1.

One of our clients had an iphone app that wasn't getting much traction due to competition. We now own about 12 of the top 20 spots for the 4 buying words. Bottom line: just outrank them!

Interesting comments. The chaff approach looks interesting.
Any pointers to HOWTO's or resources in the downloads?

I know that positive approach is best but I'm looking for some
'nasty' stuff !!

Why go to all the trouble of being nasty? If it's not a competitive keyword a few Web 2.0 properties and a few backlinks will sort it out.

I've also found unless it's really bad (or god forbid true) a few places with negative comments doesn't do much harm (unless it's at position one) because people expect a balanced view when researching. All good comments is sometimes a warning flag at least to me and in that case I'll dig deeper (mabe 10 pages deep) you'll never push them that far out.

Spam dont work google will not penalize a page for receiving links.

The best you can do is make keyword domains, blogspot domains,Web 2.0 pages and optimize all them to appear on the first page.

If you have the 3 first places, then you have 90% of the searchs..

I have a couple clients who I've done this for. It wasn't competition, rather it was a negative article, but its basically the same process. You can try building links for adult and gambling sites, but it could end up working against you. What I've found to work best is push the other sites up. Mainly through backlink building. You can create more keyword rich pages to rank, or you can rank the ones that are already in place. Good luck.

These are not specific keywords. These are company names. let's say that I have a client ABC Widgets and I search for ABC Widgets and I see some negative pages, reviews etc.

How do I drive these down?

Yeah I read about that somewhere yesterday. Some guy got arrested for it lol. He used bad publicity to rank higher in the serp's, but he also threatened clients in all sorts of ways. They say he might get 20 years in the slammer...

there are many "competition spy" programs out there you may want to look at. check the reviews for the programs and the one that stands out is the one you wanna purchase (or download...).

Backlink to that site with anchor texted "buy viagra" or "penis enlargement" so it's filtered as adult content and that changes the game all at once ;) .

That's interesting... I wonder if that actually works??? Not looking to do it myself, but very interesting concept all the same. Any more info on this concept?

Go make linkedin, twitter, facebook, youtube, digg, myspace accounts with your exact company name and get them indexed. Might need a few backlinks to get it flowing. These should populate the first page easy with "authority"
domains.

Backflip --- Thanks - thats a positive WH way
accelerator -- Ooooo now that's nasty - i love it
Any more nasty tricks like that?? Anybody?

Seems like the Dirty Tricks Department has dried up

Anything else please??

unless you do some semi illegal stuff like hacking into a few edu blogs and then reporting them for it your better of just making pages and flat out out ranking them.

Ive had a guy throw porn links at a review of mine and now im plastered at the #1 spot for my term and even a shorter term i wasnt aiming for.

You can push the negative results down or off into the black abyss by bumping it with positive and info from multiple sources as mentioned above. This also will give you the added bonus of more interlinking for your client anyway when there is consistency in the message about them from multiple sources, ie blogs, sites, reviews, articles, feeds, etc

Or you can spend some money and get someone to do dirty work for you, there are lots of folks with some nasty stuff.

Just depends on how you want to spend Christmas :)
