Should I start a web designing company?

Hello,

I'm planning to start my own web designing company, but there's one issue. My parents don't want me to quit college to do this (I'm 17, almost 18). I'm currently following a 4 year study which is called User Centered Design. I feel like I'm wasting my time on this study, and feel like I'm better off teaching myself by doing tutorials and such.

Is anyone on here also a web designer with no degree in at all? Please post any tips, advice or just information about becoming a web designer for a living.

The issue is that the study I'm doing doesn't interest me at all. I'm in my second semester right now and I haven't learned anything about web developtment or web design at all!

There are 6 month courses available in 'professional webdesign' and 'web development' in my country (which will give you a certificate of completion) but these are online courses and aren't being funded by the government, and they're very expensive (over 1000 euros).

Web design courses in most countries are usually behind what is cutting edge. Whether or not you stay at college, you should definitely do web design for smaller companies. This will get you into using tools like photoshop, dreamweaver and flash, and should also get you into things like wordpress, joomla and teach you a bit of php code. If you get stuck with a task just search on google.

I'm already good at HTML & CSS and know my way around photoshop as I've designed websites before. I also know some basic onpage SEO techniques which I'm currently testing on my latest website.

When I actually go through with this I will learn php, jquery and do lots of photoshop designing tutorials.

BTW I'm wondering if anyone did the same as I'm planning to do. I really want to hear stories (either success or failure) about setting up a web design/development company at young age (and without a degree if you will )

Stay in school. There is plenty of time to do web design later! Web design is a slow road to the super bowl anyways. People aren't paying out like they did 2 years ago. You need to stay put, and when you have your degree, the economy should be better for you to start your own business. I love the entrepreneurial spirit in a person, but these times are best to gain your knowledge and store it up for a better time.

u will earn a degree certificate .. which will be useful for the rest of your life ..
in future , if ur current biz doesnt go well and u plan to do a job ... u wll have a hard time ..finding a employer who will hire college dropouts .. (or atleast ur salary will be less)

Been there done that. If you can do the designing on the side while completing school, DO IT!
If you are thinking of letting go of school, its NOT worth it by any means. Its a jungle out there.

I do web design, but have changed the path to designing for myself because people aren't paying after you put tons of hours into their company. Sorry to be harsh but this is what fun stuff you get to look forward to when you leave school. Chin up!

Im 17 and quit daily high school a few years ago (I study at home now)
So I have plenty of free time!

I have no degree or any shit like that but still I make good money!
My advice find a way to study without having to waste many hours per day and start making money now!!

Just for the record iv been hired as a web dev in pretty big companies without having a degree
The ONLY thing that matters in this business its your CODE!

Edit: BTW it will cool having a skype call sometime

Don't quit college, trust me I speak from experience. Don't make the mistake that I did, it took me years to recover and get back on track in terms of earnings.

On the other hand, I am a web desinger without a degree in any design courses. But I basically design for my own uses, not to sell to people. Good luck mate. Hold your heads high.

I would 500% advice you to complete your degree first. Web design is an ocean. You will not be a pro by knowing something.

Let me give you a plan:

Go to your college as usual.

do some projects like 3 hours a day on spare time and learn learn as much as you can when you are get time.

Once you prepare yourself as a dev, start ya own business, where you will have lots of stuff, a backup even if ya company doesnt goes well, you will get enough time to learn more on the web design and a handful of clients to set your business to up right away.

I don't have a degree, but honestly running a web design company does not take up that much time. Stay in school, and start it up on the side. Once you are making money, and can fully support yourself, then and only then think about leaving school. 99.9% of people will benefit from having a college degree. Stay in there, its only a couple years. And as a web designer, you will be making more money than your friends, and working a whole lot less.
