How to study competitor methods..

I will preface this thread by letting you know right off the bat that I am a newb. I am here to learn and the search box has become my best friend. I have learned many new things and I am applying the things I learn almost on a daily basis.

My question: Is there a good way to figure out what kind of method a competitor is doing to build his backlinks? If so, what is the best way to do this? I am assuming that if I can figure it out I can put a good plan together to outrank them. Please share your thoughts and let me know...

My opinion is to you use backlinks parser to crawl your competitors backlinks ....then split them into forums, blogs, articles .e.tc follow their footprints then blast the url's related to each segments

download market samurai and seoquake toolbar for firefox. Analyze backlinks using Market samurai, it will get PR and anchor. Analyze other stuff like Onpage seo from seoquake and much more. This two tool will be alot.

just search your competitor on google and you can see some hints there. check their backlinks too

the site i am trying to figure out is appshopper dot com.

I cant figure out what they are doing for the life of me but look at how many backlinks they have.

Is it BH?

As far i can see in siteexplorer is that (as it limits to 1000 results) they have bought a sitewide link from macrumors dot com.You can find them at macrumor's other sites section.

Hmmm, so what you are saying is that they bought a link from macrumors and that is boosting them? So one link is doing all that??

i hvn't said that all of their links r from 1 place just the 1st thousands that showed by yahoo.
They have unique and viral apps so they r getting many natural backlinks .. You need to understand that marketing strategy in all niches r not same .. so if u wanna compete with them u have to develop some apps by ur self or hire some1 else to do it for u but believe me u will need a pretty good amount of cash for it.If u can do that i don't think u will need to do any agressive backlinks from ur part .. some forum marketing in ur niche and some links from popular site about apple will do ..
