"style.css?xxxx.xxx" ??? I'm confused!

hello ....

I copied a website that is a WP blog

My site is not WP, so I just copied the source code, and created files on my host! (I know I shouldn't have copied a "WP" blog, but i did!)

There are two lines of code that I don't know how to "recreate"

the last part of the url is

/style.css?011010-205657
/layout.css?011010-210708

so I create a path on my host, with the same directory path,
(I didn't show here, I believe that's not a critical thing, as long as the directory names are the same)
and saved the files.....

but the "file type" seems to just indicate
"file" I imagine it is supposed to be saved as "css"?

tried it but it doesn't display the page properly?

should I create a directory with that long name?
and then the file as a ? file?

any direction would be greatly appreciated!

If there is a Query string on the end of a CSS it usually is just to beat browser caching problems...
The file itself will simply be style.css

It usually is just a randomized string or the date/time etc...

In some VERY RARE cases they could handle CSS files as if they were server side scripts and generate the styling sheet on the fly but in most(if not all cases) it is just caching issues.

but I'm unsure as to exactly whether I should have a folder by that name,
then the file is just a generic "layout.css"?

(I'm a fish out of water)

in each case I create a directory with each of the above names
exactly as they are shown, then for the one I made the actual
file name "style.css" and the other "layout.css"

is that the correct way? (it didn't work)

since I'm trying to recreate it on my own site
it will remain "static" once I save it and it displays properly
so is the "?" question mark an issue?

Everything after the ? are parameters so if you have the files but don't use the parameters, they are discarded.

You need to copy the css file from the website you ripped the html from. So if you ripped the html code from

somebodywebsite.com

you will also find the css file at

somebodywebsite.com/style.css

.

Once you do this copy the complete file and make a style.css on your server containing the contents from the ripped website style.css. If I'm making sense.

I renamed the directories as "style.css" and "layout.css"

and then played with renaming the files themselves as


style
css

also

style.css
layout.css

and even

style
layout

but stilll it doesn't display properly, may I ask a big favor?
can you show me how I should name the directory and the file names?
since I don't know coding at all, I'm just trying to interpret your words, and I'll forever misinterpret them

that's exactly what I did...

for example this is the actual path (I'll just use one of the urls)

hiswebsite.com/wp-content/themes/thesis_16/style.css?011010-205657

changed to mine

mywebsite.com/wp-content/themes/thesis_16/style.css?011010-205657

so I made this and put it in the index code, and made each folder, and then copied all the source code from the final "style.css?011010-205657"
and played with naming the final file within that directory, not the source code, just the name of the file

Once you do this copy the complete file and make a style.css on your server containing the contents from the ripped website style.css. If I'm making sense.

I didn't make a directory with that name instead just made the file
with layout and the other style .css and that worked

so what was the problem that you were not able to get it to work in the first place.

I use query strings on css and javascripts so if i change the css or js the browsers dont get it out from the cache. I usally automate this and fill the query string with the file make time.
