Kinda new to this, finally started a Wordpress site, why would people be trying to spam it? I though the nofollow made that pointless?

Spammers follow no rules or codes of conduct they just spam period - to them it is all a numbers game!

Use anti-spam plugin. I recommend akismet because It's pretty powerful and really hard to bypass it!

Yeah, get a plugin.. Or accept the comments as they might draw more people to your blog.

Congratulations, you've just become part of a baffling process in which scrapebox users spam millions of wordpress blogs daily in the search for the odd 5% which are auto approve.
This takes so much effort - i.e. dodging akismet with parasite hosts, proxies etc - that I rarely do it myself.
Add to this that most of the links are nofollow anyway.
But there is nothing you can do to stop spam landing in your comment queue, short of disabling comments altogether.

akismet+recaptcha are two powerful plugins to stop spammers spam my blog!

well i understand why they are spamming, but I just though that the whole "nofollow" thing made it pointless, i mean, google doesn't care about their anime link if it says nofollow right? and it's not bothering me, I've only had a few, just seems like it's futile for them...

Total numbers game, and nofollow links do help dictate the keywords that you rank for. Visitors also click those comment links if it is related to something they are interested in. So if someone spams Business sites with related links and keywords they get a fair amount of related traffic.
- Akismet is pointless, IMO. I use WordPress HashCash with auto-delete. I used to have it on auto-moderate failing comments, but out of hundreds (if not thousands) across my sites, there were no non-spam comments.
- You can also change these comments to comments praising your site -- some comments already fit this bill, so you can just delink them (there is a plugin that makes this one-click).
- You can block HTML in the comments with a quick hack.
- You can also just set your blog comments to Moderate. Not a big deal, especially if you are getting <100 legit comments a day.
- Take out the "powered by" thing at the bottom of your site. THIS is how people find your blog in the first place.

Wrong!!! backlinks are backlinks period if you don't want to boost your pr but want to boost your serp; you just backlink your b*t.
Tip :there's a feature in wp that allows you to avoid the spam, I think It says
"allow comments"
"allow track-backs"

This is what G writes about it:
In general, we don't follow them. This means that Google does not transfer PageRank or anchor text across these links. Essentially, using nofollow causes us to drop the target links from our overall graph of the web. However, the target pages may still appear in our index if other sites link to them without using nofollow, or if the URLs are submitted to Google in a Sitemap. Also, it's important to note that other search engines may handle nofollow in slightly different ways.

On the other side, the vast number of (nofollow wordpress) links might be still a good means for G to rank a page. I would not swear that G omits nofollows, but it is really hard to say.
