My theory is if I can get on page 1 of SERPs with my site, then I can get to the #1 or #2 spot for that term (in most cases), so I'd rather use the authority of eZA or other article sites to attack related but harder keywords and not have my own articles pushing my pages down.I guess I just don't see it as "competing with yourself." If you have 2 spots in rankings, one from an article directory and one from your site, that's going to equal more traffic than if you only had one spot. If a site is ranking well for a KW, then you can work on getting it's rankings up, but this takes time. So until that happens, why not just ride along with EZA's top spot for the time being?
Over half the search traffic is hitting either the #1 or #2 listing for any term, so unless it's a keyword with massive search volume it's almost useless to hold any other spot because you'll just get trickles of traffic from them.
It is all a question of perception I suppose, but the reality is if you chase the same term with an eZA article and your own site, you are kind of competing with yourself for the same limited traffic. For me, the obvious choice is to use article sites with authority for chasing harder and related terms than I'm chasing with my own site pages.
