I second Spinrite I had a drive that sounded almost like a typewriter it clacked so loudly and I ran Spinrite on it, and I was able to get most of the data off it.

Buddy, the problem is, I live in India and have approached TOP MOST company (in India) in the field of Data Recovery and they said that NO ONE can extract data OFF my HDD in Asia. They have No Idea outside the Asia.

Now, even I want to contact some Highly Professional company in US/UK/Canada/etc and am ready to pay for it ANY (reasonable) amount. By the way, this Indian company was gonna do this for 500 PLUS US$, and I was ready to pay them. So, Money is NOT an issue if someone can extract data off my HDD.

Kindly Help me Guys, to find some Highly Professional and state of the art recovery lab equipped company.

Thanks for your advice and PM buddy. But the thing is, I don't want to experiment on this anymore as it may reduce the chances of data recovery by some professional company. I still have HOPE that somebody may extract data off my HDD anytime soon but If I keep on experimenting on this, it may damage the platter to the level that it could become impossible to recover anything from it.

If you can get someone to revive at least part of your Hard Drive, have them look first for a folder called "My Roboform Data" in your "My Documents" folder. That is where all of your Roboform data is stored.

You could try buying r-studio. It managed to recover some 6000 lost files from a HD of mine that crashed and had some scratches on it. It's a long shot but might be worth a try.

Also, some versions of openBSD and Linux are used in Forensic data recovery, so that's another option you can explore. If any OS in the world can read a pooped HDD it's BSD or Linux. One such distribution is called DEFT Linux.

doing so scratched the platters the first time and will more everytime. IF YOU WANT any chance of only a portion being saved be prepared to fork out a huge pile of cash, huge!

hate to say it but the main majority of your data will be gone without spending 10's of thousands. Scratched platter is THE WORST thing that can happen to your hdd as well as turning it on/trying to recovery via software as it requires the disk to spin at full rpm.


All i can say is backup your most important files on dvd's and external hdd.

external is not enough though get a safe storage box for dvd's and keep them in there

externals can crash to!

In all seriousness, there is a way to recover the data. My company's server took a shit once and we recovered all of the data, through the help of capital data recovery.

However, since then, we have 2 separate backup systems installed. They leapfrog backup with each other every week.

All i can say is do not power on the hard drive

i can pretty much say doing so has caused the hdd catastrophic failure in the first place due to internal hardware fault.



some of the advice in here leds me to believe some know **** all about hardware to gve a legit response on what to do like using software period i have been a computer tech for years and know more then any future shop or bs computer shop

Try it the forensics way. If the drive can be recognized, use a program to make an image of it. This means everything will be copied from the broken hdd to another hdd byte by byte.


Then extract the usable contents using that image and not the original broken hdd as you may be risking further damage. Here's a list of programs that can do that (some have own mechanisms to detect HDDs so even if Windows says 'no drive' you may still have access to it:

Also if it is still not working, try imaging software for other platforms like Linux or Solaris. Most of the data recovery companies are doing it this way.

As I said, search for 'forensics drive image' or something. Other than that and if money is indeed not a BIG issue, try finding companies that actually work with governments. The usual adwords driven google hits are mostly good for retrieve your 100 photos from your ancient Pentium II PC.

Thanks for all your valuable advice and tips guys. But my problem is, I CAN NOT use any software to recover my data myself. Why? Coz the Data Recovery Company (http://www.stellarinfo.com/) have ALREADY assessed (tampered) my HDD and have raised their hands. I even told them that MONEY is NOT the problem, IF their is some possibility of Recovering data but the replied with CLEAR NO. Saying that "There are Heavy Scratches on Platter" and the DATA can not be recovered.

Now, I am ONLY left with just ONE solution. Some HIGHLY professional and Experienced Data Recovery company who can extract data Off my HDD with a Reasonable Fee (like $1k or so could be reasonable But asking for 10k or so is Unrealistic)

This happened to me one time, I'm not sure if it was heavy scratches but in my case I contacted this company that was affiliated with dell and even with a discount it was 700$.
It was well worth it but I learned my lesson and always backup now. No doubt they have opened the drive in a clean room and tried a number of items. The next step will be more expensive, it is hard to believe all the platters are scratched.
At the very least save the drive and one day we can hope there is the technology to access it and by then you'll have the money to pay the no doubt exhobortant fees.
