What are these "Threads" bots have?

I see in all the automation softwares (twitter/facebook account creators/followers, etc) they have all an option "Threads" from 1 to 10 (and None)

What the purpose of these?

All the answers here are correct, but there's usually one extra ingredient required for doing multithreading and that's usually the number of proxies you have available too.

There is pretty much no point in using something like a multithreaded facebook posting tool or script if you only have a single IP to post from, you would get banned in a heartbeat. So you usually need multiple IPs, or proxies, that you use in conjunction with a large number of accounts for whatever network it is you're using the bot for.
 
Ah I always thought it referred to threads in a multi threaded CPU.

Dual Core/ Quad Core and so on.
