Just a quick question about .gov and .edu backlinks..

Are .gov.au, .edu.au, .gov.nz, .edu.nz, .gov.bb, .edu.bb, ... , etc still counted as gov and edu backlinks by Google?
Or do they hold no more authority than a regular page of the same PR?

Thanks.

I believe a gov.xx or edu.xx is better, most gov and edu's will have something on the end anyway?

Yep! google do recognize them as education and government website.
There are going on discussions regarding power of .edu and .gov back links. However as in my experiences .edu and .gov back links do push ranking faster than normal back link with the same PR.

.EDU and .GOV are for US .AC.UK for UK Education. Other .edu.xx and .gov.xx are for other countries.

No extra weight, according to the big G.

To be fair even if they do carry more weight I highly doubt Google will ever disclose this as it would be a green light for spammers.

my sites that have them - appear to rank better than those that do not

but like anything just focussing on these alone is probably a bad thing

definately need a balance.

I don't believe mattcutts, as I know a site ranking high with less edu links than the site which has more than thousands of backlinks.

that just means that the sites that has 1000+ links probably has 1000+ crap links that arent as valuable. Im not saying that the EDU or GOV are more valuable then any other valuable link, just that any time you see a site with 1000's of links ranking poorly, its usually due to poor backlinks from un trusted or non-authority sites or paid directories or something else that google doesnt give any value to.

Quality over Quantity. Its simple and will always win out.

It's quite hard to have 100 backlinks from EDU and GOV. 1000 backlinks from PR4-9 are easier. Anyway, I still think that you need both Quality and Quantity to win the game.

Matt Cutts is a lair, he came up with nofollow once and then turned it up side down soon after. Many things he says is just to full webmasters that try to game SE.

hi, you mean nofollow links still has linkjuice value?

How do you get edu and gov backlink? any specific tutorial that can help finding it? Thanks

Yes, .edu. Whatever
is still trusted as a EDU domain..

i wonder if edu.com is taken or gov.com is taken. now i gotta go check,
seriously though, EDU or GOV . anything is recognized as a EDU or GOV url, so take advantage of it and get as many backlinks as you can think

Cheers guys, I gotta agree.. I don't think it's matt's place to be commenting there or that he even knows

I would say .edu are 10 times better than ordinary blog with good page rank....

I don't think Matt Cutts is to be trusted.
For example he ones said in a video, in this video youtube.com/watch?v=p8mUXQzwEvs ,

But in there own patents it's referenced as a anti spam measurement, not as a anti-phishing filter.
As mentioned here and shown in a diagram here.
Lying to the interviewer might be a bold statement to make, but it was certainly contradicting.
Also Google subdevides there personal into smaller specialized groups so no one person has all the information about google's working.
Matt Cutts is only the head of web spam, Amit shinghal is the one responsible for the serp algorithms. If Matt Cutts is to be trusted, you can seriously doubt if he has the knowledge to answer all the questions correctly.

Anyways if you believe that edu and govs have a edge over other domains, trustrank algorithms are worth looking into.
Here are couple more high value domain extension;

.INT
.PRO
.COOP
.AERO

Very nice. accetable terms.
