I've been working in SEO, mainly on-page optimization, Google Business Profile and link building. Lately, I've been trying to understand Digital PR and what agencies actually do.

How different is it from traditional link building? What does a typical campaign look like, and what are clients really paying for?

Also, has anyone seen Digital PR improve brand mentions or citations in ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews? Any real-world experience would be helpful.

Just trying to understand how it works in practice from people doing it.

This distinction is based on the fact that traditional linkbuilding begins with "where can we get a link?" while Digital PR begins with "what do we have to show the media that is really worth mentioning?" This may include original data, a good industry story or maybe expert commments that generate natural coverage. As far as AI search goes, in my opinion, it is important to make your brand recognizable in trusted sources rather than try to attract AI mentions. The mentions and citations in Chatgpt and Perplexity are definitely worth being analyzed but you shouldn't guarantee that they will appear after every single PR campaign....

Biggest difference i see is digital PR is built around a story or data worth covering, links are just a byproduct. Clients mostly pay for the research and the outreach to journalists, not the links themselves. For AI search i think the real win is getting mentioned across a bunch of trusted sites, but i wouldnt promise any specific citation in chatgpt or perplexity from one campaign.

Traditional link building is you asking a site owner for a placement. Digital PR is creating like a journalist wants to cover like facts and figures or a take on breaking news so the links come as a byproduct of the coverage.
For AI search I have noticed they mostly pull from bigger and high authority sites.

Digital PR works better when you have something interesting to share, like useful data, research, or expert tips.

honestly, I think that the power of digital PR lies in the message you are trying to tell nd not in creating a blog post with links. I am curious to hear from those of you who have done a PR campaign nd measured how many times their brand was mentioned on chatgpt nd perplexity after the message was delivered?

From what I have seen, it helps with AI answers mostly when the coverage repeats your brand name next to the topic. ChatGPT and Perplexity cite news sites far more often than random guest posts.

i would be monitoring the number of tymes that the brand begins to appear in the AI responses post every campaign merely looking at the backlinks will not tell me if that PR investment was worth it or not.

In honesty, I might take into account the measure of the brand mention in chatgpt or perplexity before nd after the PR campaign and not just count the backlink . It can be quite fascinating to learn whether or not the citation in authoritative web source can help gain even more citations. anyone done that?

A mention on a trusted industry website can help people discover your brand, even if it doesn't send much direct traffic.

Digital PR is about getting your brand featured in relevant publications through stories, data, expert comments, or original research. It can help with brand mentions, referral traffic, and authority.

You can also focus on contextual brand mentions and Top X or Best Of listicle guest posts to increase your chances of being cited in AI generated answers.

Digital PR can help with brand visibility, but AI mentions and actual source citations aren't the same thing. It's also worth checking whether those mentions continue after the campaign ends, rather than just looking at the results during the first few days.

I think clients are paying for the research, content ideas, outreach, and relationships with publishers, not just the links. Getting coverage on good sites takes a lot of work.

I think Digital PR is more about earning relevant media coverage and brand mentions than just building backlinks digital PR can certainly help in AI visibility but i would love to see some concrete examples proving that these mentions do indeed generate citations for your brand in the ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews pages.

Digital PR goes beyond backlinks by earning brand mentions and coverage on relevant, authoritative websites. It can help AI search visibility by building brand credibility, but results depend on the quality and relevance of the coverage, there are no guarantees of AI citations.
