Seo for WordPress Category

I am using Wordpress for a product site but Google keeps focusing on posts that are being published in the category instead of the category. I see ranking for posts but categories are not getting any ranking. I already have "all in one seo" plugin installed and have it to set to index for categories.

Also, any idea how I can add text to category pages.

Being on Wordpress for 4 years now. Being on AISP for 4 years also. Check All in one seo pack and see if the checkbox for Use noindex for Categories is ticked. Also, check your robots.txt and see if it excludes your categories.

Are you sure I should check the box with "noindex" ?? I thought I should uncheck to prevent the plugin from adding noindex tag.

Exactly. You should be unchecking that for your purposes.
My biggest content site gets a lot of traffic from category and tag archive pages.

One thing that helps with category page SEO is to make use of widgets.

- You should have "Widget Logic" plugin installed.

- Use a text widget in which you will have a paragraph or two about the category with relevant keywords. Widget logic plugin allows you to specify where you would like that widget to appear. You use WP conditional tags in there:
http://codex.wordpress.org/Conditional_Tags#A_Single_Post_Page

So, for instance, if you want that widget to appear only on the archive page of your category #5, you put in there: is_category('5'). Check the above WP codex page for more ideas.

on a side note to your problem - AIOSEO cannot do meta description for categories (last time I checked, at least) - there was a workaround to fix that in the template, but it's too much tinkering.
if interested, you can used Headspace2 instead (it's cumbersome and messy, but does things right) and look in the support page for a quick fix to get it to generate meta desc and kw for categories. hope this helps, unless someone else has a simpler way of doing it.
