Help me to decipher this website's secret

Hello there,
I have be on this forum for some time now and i have read a lot about white hat techniques so i think to be well informed.
However if I look at a competitor of mine i always find myself at loss!
I am in a competitive niche and one of my competitor is www. web trickz dot com (pls, remove all spaces).

If i check its backlinks with backlinkwatch.com or market samuari or other valuable software you guys know, i find that this blog has only a handful of backlinks. Let's say that this blog has around 100 backlinks for example...if i do the same with my blog I find out that my blog has 10.000 backlinks (still an example)...that's a lot, right?

However, despite this blog is younger that my website, despite this blog has got less backlinks etc., this same blog has managed to double its traffic in a mater of one year and a half, thus managing to overcome my own website.

Tomake long story short, I am asking you guys, yes, you guys who have greater experience than me... WHAT'S ITS SECRET?

Any suggestion is really, really welcome!

dude did you check his keywords? ipad iphone blah blah Hi trafiic so theres no secret.
and regarding the links... is and "old" domain with 2k indexed pages and 20+- google links PR3 no misteries he is just good.

Hello and thanks for replying.
i am not questioning about how old it is or how many pages it has got...my website is one year older than it, it has got more pages than it, it has around the same keywords, and it has got a higher PR than it!!!
I am just asking how is it possible that this blog has only 100 backlinks (while mine has got 10.000 ) and it has mananged to double its traffic in one year???

all in all my blog is better than it but it manage to outrank mine with a handful of meaning less backlink!!!

maybe your competition has a lot of backlinks from reputable sources

This did make me smile as I am in a very similar position with one of my sites. In theory, my site should rank higher and yet my competitors does. I have since found out that the guy is a member of this forum, albeit, fairly inactive.

It's a mystery to me, but I think the most important thing is not to spend all your time concentrating on one specific site/niche. There are lots of untapped keywords out there that would take a lot less effort to rank for. Don't take it personally, just look at it from a business perspective i.e. time=money and you want the best return.

ive got him showing as 9,986 backlinks though siteexplorer - but youre saying he only has 100 in MS and backlnkwatch?

if it was just 100 backlinks i would have happily dug deeper, but not on the best part of 10k as ive got stuff of my own to get on with.

does he have squidoo's showing up? if so, look for linkwheels beneath and around it/them.

either way, get yourself a frontline of 5 x ezine articles. republish on the other 4 or 5 top article directories and have links pointing to your home page.

re-write them, publish on a 2nd tier of less powerful article directories and have links
pointing to your 1st tier (frontline) of article directories to generate linkjuice.

get listed at 100 web directories and point to home page.

5 press releases posted at assorted PR sites, pointing to your home page.

get some videos going and broadcast em pointing to homepage as well as some deeplinking. do same with podcasts as well as publishing documents on open sharing sites.

get yourself some web2.0 properties going too and post some articles on there with a flurry of keywords deep backlinked.

SEPARATELY linkwheel for each important keyword - do this slowly and in a haphazard fashion.

if youve got some cash, go and buy yourself some PR 3 - 5 backlinks too.

oh and did i mention SOCIAL BOOKMARKING in any of this? no, didnt thnk so. well make sure that youre bookmarking left, right and centre. bookmark everything but make sure youre using other bookmarkers as well as youre own.

vary the anchor texts in all of the above

Possible Reason:

#1 Your competitor might be good in on-site SEO.

#2 High PR backinks from same niche

he does have quite a few good links.like the link from labnol[the link is coming from a very credible and reputed domain plus a high value page].that could make a world of difference.

@britcpa: the backlink figure I said was just an example. I didnt mean 100 it was an example to tell that if the guy has got 100 i have 10.000 backlink more. In my case the guy has got 9,986 and I have 21,437 to be exact! However your tips were very welcomed! Thanks!

I have been buildlinking for quite a lot of time now and i will continue to do so. In the past I have done and bought social bookmarks, angela backlinks, mininets etc but despite all this, it looks like Google is giving me juice and traffic a little at a time (and in fact my blog tends to double its traffic every year..yes I know it is nice but this doesnt correspond to the effort i put in building my blog!)

One thing that i have noticed is that majority of tech blogs are own by indian guys with their own "private" network. They tend to help each other so that as soon as a blog gains great pagerank it will link to another blog (owned by another indian) with less pagerank.
If on one side this is a very nice and supportive thing for indian guys, on the other side leave other "non-indian" guys in a very distressed position (because they dont have such powerful network) to say the least.

Google should take this into cosideration but well...it doesnt!

PS: another note from the blog i asked you to give a look. I still remember when it started to increase its traffic. it almost happened overnight. One day it had regular traffic and in a matter of a week it started increasing its traffic by 15% almost every day...I think that it has got some good SEO techniques worth being studied.
