for me, however, uptime, technical support nd cost come first, followed by customer feedback. the ads may look amazing, but performance after a few month will tell all the difference.

i would say that it is a combination of both. recommendation of a friend carries much more weight since there is already an element of trust in the process, whereas advertisements are used in order to get introduced to a particular good or service. it all boils down to the relevance nd credibillity of the offer.

Recommendations from other site owners, or at the industry boards may be one reference, that may prove to be better than what one may find in web search.

There is a large number of hosts that are targeting new, starting up customers with all sorts of special deals, in order to lock them into long term, auto-renewing contracts, with a notably higher recurring price, and a lot of small print.

For any type of money making site I'd generally stay away from shared hosting, and get a proper hosting setup with a host that owns their infrastructure, such that can be easily upgraded as the site grows. with real support, and Ideally with no long-term commitments.
