The August 2026 spam update finished rolling out on 21 August, about 4 days ago.
Rankings that slipped this week are often crawl waste, index bloat, or broken templates, not a mystery policy. I run the same technical pass on every site before I touch copy.
Crawl budget first
- Pull Coverage and Crawl stats in Search Console for 18-21 Aug and the week before
- Flag 404, 5xx, and soft 404 spikes that started during the rollout window
- Block faceted URLs, calendar params, and session IDs in robots.txt if they still get crawled
- Cap XML sitemaps to live, indexable URLs only
- Recrawl after you prune, then confirm Googlebot hits dropped on junk paths
Index hygiene
- Export all indexed URLs and match them to a canonical map
- noindex thin filters, print views, and expired promo pages
- Fix self-canonicals that point at HTTP or www mismatches
- Remove orphan URLs that sit in sitemaps but have zero internal links
- Recheck the Generative AI performance report after the 13-17 Aug logging gap so you do not chase fake impression drops
Speed and render
- Measure LCP and INP on mobile templates that actually rank
- Defer third party scripts that block first paint
- Serve one hreflang set per language, not duplicates with tracking params
- Validate structured data still parses after the last template deploy
People treat a spam update as a content rewrite and skip logs. If Googlebot is burning time on junk, your good URLs wait.
Which crawl path on your site still returns 200 when it should be gone?
