I’ve noticed that there is a big difference in views for similar videos - is it down to thumbnails/titles,
or is it something to do with the algorithms

Yes generellay it is based on algorithm of youtube like hashtags and description for the video

It’s usually a mix of both. A strong title and thumbnail help get the click, while watch time, CTR, engagement and audience retention play a big role in how far YouTube pushes the video.

Make sure the thumbnails, titles and hashtags are on point, and stay consistent, then you are good to go.

It is a mix of all, you also need strong hooks because otherwise your audience will bounce.

a lot of it is just the initial seed audience lottery. yt tests similar videos on different small groups of users first. if that first batch of impressions goes to people who arent active or interested, the CTR and retention kill the video before it even has a chance. thats why sometimes you can reupload the exact same video with a tiny edit and it suddenly takes off.

For video-based social media platforms like YouTube and TikTok, getting recommended by the algorithm is one of the most important factors. Videos that get recommended can attract thousands or even millions of views, while videos that don't get recommended may receive very few views or even almost none.

YouTube views are important on upload channel videos which are needed to upload with good captions and trend hashtag to index video on pages for views and other engagements,it is advise to hosta good subscribers channel to index channel in related niche/keyword search.

From my point of view, some YouTube videos get more views because they have a good title and thumbnail, and people watch and engage with them.

The view a re dependent on the yt algorithm as well as on the hashtags and niche of the video if the hashtags and niche are fine and good maybe your video can be seen of fyp.

Title and thumbnail help people click, but that’s not enough. If viewers do not watch the video for long, it can still struggle to get more views.

It’s usually a mix of both Titles and thumbnails help get the initial click but YouTube also looks at viewer behavior such as watch time satisfaction and engagement when recommending videos. So two similar videos can perform very differently depending on how viewers respond to them

Sometimes videos that appears to look worse win just because people actually watch them to the very end. I would consider the retention and traffic source first before deciding to change the thumbnail of the vdo .
