“There is an emerging content type elsewhere on the internet of, basically, podcasts where people read Reddit content,” Huffman explained on the call. “I think this version of, like, listened-to or spoken Reddit can be really engaging, as well,” he said. “So that would be almost a different format entirely.”

It’s not clear how these types of Reddit videos will be incorporated into Reddit’s main app, but Huffman teased that the company will have something available for testing “later this year.”

The news comes as mainstream social and entertainment apps experiment with adding TikTok-like video feeds to their products.

Their video uploading process is painful on mobile though and in my experience if you upload a 1gb~ file sometimes it just fails.

Good for content creators but it will dilute the quality now.

also because its likely going to be Ai generated, making it even lower than it is now. since reddit is plagued with those posts.

Wouldn't surprise me at all. Reddit has been adding more creator-focused features, so some kind of monetization program seems like the next step. If they can keep creators posting original content instead of sending people to other platforms, it's a win for them.

Yeah it definitely feels like they're laying the groundwork first. If it works, ı wouldn't be surprised to see a wider creator program roll out soon.

Reddit's Contributor Program pays out on gold your posts and comments receive, roughly a dollar per gold once you clear 5,000 karma in the trailing year and about ninety cents below that, with a ten dollar minimum before you can withdraw. The economics are the interesting part: the payout provider takes $2.25 plus a quarter percent, so cashing out at the minimum loses you about a fifth of it to fees. Reddit has also already tried video once, RPAN ran for a couple of years and was shut down at the end of 2022. The structural problem underneath both attempts is that Reddit ranks posts rather than creators, so there is no real follow graph for a creator economy to sit on.
