Demand is smaller but the competition has weak links and thin content. That is where a new site can actually win.

Same rule for both. Pull up the top 10 for your main keyword and look at their backlink profiles first. If everyone on page one has thousands of referring domains, pick something else.

Niche matters less than the sub-niche honestly. "Health" is evergreen and impossible. "Recovery after a specific surgery" is evergreen and completely doable for a small site.

What I look for is a topic where people search the same questions year after year but the big sites only cover it in one generic article. That gap is where a small blog actually ranks. The broad niche is just the category it sits in.
