The Official BHW 2026 Men's World Cup 2026 Lucky Dip - The Draw!

DAY 17 ROUND-UP

And that's it! The group stage is over. 48 is down to 32 - check the opening post of this thread to see if your team has received the Strikethrough of Doom.

Austria (@Danielag) and Algeria (@Maximilian P.) just needed a point from each other and I don't think there's a single person who expected them to play out a 3-3 draw. Both teams are insane - and through. Argentina (@sms_chief_of_messaging) won the group as they cruised to a 3-1 win over Jordan (@Aleandra), who go home pointless.

England (@WinningLife) struggled to a 2-0 win over the exiting Panama (@Alis), which meant we were treated to another wretched rendition of the awful Wonderwall. I hate Oasis more than England, for the record. Croatia (@jenerali) will have to wait to go back to the nursing home as they're through after beating Ghana (@BlogPro), who are also through.

Colombia (@Lifeisnotgood) and Portugal (@Rufai) played out one of the best goalless draws you'll see, and they're joined in the knockouts by DR Congo (@Tanjiro B) who beat Uzbekistan (@Yaseli) 3-1.

---------------------------------
This is the complete draw for the next round!

---------------------------------
Just the one game today! We'll have withdrawal symptoms. Canada (@Inesh) take on South Africa (@Whitcoke) and I expect the Canadians to win this one. South Africa were pretty luckly to qualify and I think Canada will take this one 2-0.

---------------------------------

A strong argument here for playing barefoot.

I noticed England struggles against teams that sit deep in a low block and wait for counterattacks
so yeah, I am pretty confident about DR Congo , hope they beat England by one goal difference

How's that collarbone dude?

DAY 18 ROUND-UP

So, just the one game yesterday - and considering how utterly tedious it was, it might have been better to have no game at all.

That said, Canada (@Inesh) squeezed through to the next round with an injury time goal. No disrespect to @Whitcoke but I'm glad South Africa are out because they bore the arse off me. And considering the boos they were getting, I'm not the only one who felt that way.

Canada play either Netherlands or Morocco in the next round and they will need to improve a lot to have any chance in that game.

------------------------------
Much busier day today and hopefully much more entertaining.

Brazil (@Fresh Money) take on Japan (@ShikharG). Could be a good one, this - the Brazilians have looked really good going forward but suspect defensively. Japan may not have the resources to take full advantage though. I'll go with 3-1 to Brazil.

Germany (@Kentoa) face Paraguay (@Salvad). Similar to the Brazilians, Germany are front-loaded. Paraguay have improved as the group stage progressed but I expect Germany to ease through this one, maybe 3-0.

Morocco (@Venusaur) vs. Netherlands (@Stavro) should be a great game - so obviously it's on in the middle of the night when I'm sleeping. Such a tough one to call but I'm going for 2-2 and Netherlands to take it in extra time.

------------------------------
America doesn't deserve football.

DAY 19 ROUND-UP

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's....

Jonathan Tah's penalty. Should land any day now.

Germany (@Kentoa) lose a World Cup penalty shootout for the first time ever after a terrible game against Paraguay (@Salvad), who didn't so much park the bus as the whole depot. Germany had a perfectly good goal chalked off by VAR (booooooo) though and should have won.

Morocco (@Venusaur) were the other penalty shootout winners after one of the worst shootouts in living memory against Netherlands (@Stavro). If Morocco can find a cutting edge up front then they are genuine contenders.

Brazil (@Fresh Money) squeezed through against a well-organised Japan (@ShikharG) but that midfield might even slower than Croatia's. Really good game, though.

---------------------------------
Today, Cote d'Ivoire (@Claudis) vs. Norway (@thelightgame) promises to be really good. Either of these two teams could go far and are evenly matched - but the Erling Haaland factor should tip it Norway's way. 2-1 to Norway.

France (@Cheyande) shouldn't have any issues with Sweden (@Kiemash), who probably won't be able to contain the French front line. Mind you, I'm not sure anyone can. 4-1 France.

Mexico (@Walterlo) have been excellent so far and should have too much against Ecuador (@soyelco). Mexico to squeeze through 1-0 although extra time is also very possible here.

---------------------------------
I say we let Jordan back in.

DAY 20 ROUND-UP

Anthony Elanga can be upset now - because Sweden (@Kiemash) are definitely out.

They were swept aside 3-0 by a France (@Cheyande) side who just look unstoppable. In fact, maybe we should just stop the tournament and give them the trophy now. It would make sense and it's definitely not to prevent the possibility of England winning it. Honest.

Mexico (@Walterlo) also look like a juggernaut, winning 2-0. Ecuador (@soyelco) didn't stand a chance once they went down to ten men after Hincapie's sending off for being a complete doofus.

And Erling Haaland took his international tally to 4,009 goals, scoring a tap-in for Norway (@thelightgame) as they squeezed by Cote d'Ivoire (@Claudis) 2-1. They face Brazil next and I can't wait.

------------------------------------
Well, if we're not giving the trophy to France yet, then England (@WinningLife) get to play DR Congo (@Tanjiro B) today. If the latter had any sense they'd just line their whole team up on the left side as England have burned through every right-back in the country. England to win 2-1 though.

Belgium (@Steptoe) were not convincing during the group stage and Senegal (@Victorjo) will provide a really rough test for them. I'm going for 1-1 here and for Senegal to win on penalties.

USA's (@prey24) impressive progress should continue against a Bosnia and Herzegovina (@SmTasker) who are well organised but reliant on set pieces to score. USA to go through 1-0.

------------------------------------
Kylian Mbappé - so good he trended twice.

DAY 21 ROUND-UP

Congratulations to England (@WinningLife) on another scintillating performance in thrashing DR Congo (@Tanjiro B).... oh, it was 2-1. Mexico next for them. In the Azteca. Best of luck with all that.

USA's (@prey24) serene progress continued with an easy 2-0 win against Bosnia and Herzegovina (@SmTasker). They could even afford to have a player sent off - although that does deny them their best player (Balogun) and scorer of the opener for the next round. That could be a problem.

Somehow Belgium (@Steptoe) are still in the World Cup. Despite being outplayed throughout, they scrambled two late goals against Senegal (@Victorjo) and then an even later extra time winner. But to be very, very blunt - Senegal absolutely fucked it up.

----------------------------
So, today Spain (@Fransh) face Austria (@Danielag). As long as Spain don't revert back to their endless sideways passing, this should be a breeze for them. Austria will need a LOT of luck - and set pieces.

Portugal (@Rufai) face Croatia (@jenerali). Croatia's players will be looking to delay returning to the old people's home by winning this one but I think Portugal will have just about too much for them.

And I'd expect Switzerland (@Angelina.sk), who have been up and down in this tournament, to find a way past Algeria (@Maximilian P.) although I'm not expecting a classic here. That's why I'll be asleep.

----------------------------
Ahh, why couldn't the ref have blown for full time immediately after this? We didn't really need the other 84 minutes, did we?

Good and exciting game with england and dr congo, although in the end somewhat predictable with harry kane box squating for glory. Dude was ready to open a 24h tesco there! lol although I think at the last hydration break, Tucal said to kane "i have officially shit my pants, and i need tesco tactics in the box for diapers!!" lol

DAY 22 ROUND-UP

It's all over for Croatia (@jenerali). They can now go back to their blankets, warm slippers and repeat showings of The Golden Girls as they were narrowly beaten 2-1 by Portugal (@Rufai). A late equaliser was denied by VAR using cricket technology - but don't blame cricket! Cricket is pure and wonderful.

It was an easier passage for Spain (@Fransh) as they cruised past Austria (@Danielag) 3-0. They barely broke sweat and one has to ask who can possibly stop Spain or France.

Switzerland (@Angelina.sk) have assumed the mantle of 'dark horses' now and they comfortably overcame Algeria (@Maximilian P.) 2-0. They do look a strong side in all positions and nobody will want to face them.

--------------------------------
It's the final day of the stupidly named Round of 32 before the stupidly named Round of 16 starts tomorrow. Just call them the 2nd round and 3rd rounds ffs.

And it's the match we've all been waiting for - Argentina (@sms_chief_of_messaging) vs. Cabo Verde (@mnunes532). You have to think Cabo Verde's good run will end at some point - but if they defend like they did against Spain, who knows? I'm still going for a comfortable Argentina win though.

Australia (@Guty) vs. Egypt (@onebink) is a tougher one to call. Not expecting too many goals and maybe not too much excitement, but I think Egypt might just grab this one, maybe through extra time or penalties.

And Colombia (@Lifeisnotgood) look to continue their sparkling start to the World Cup against Ghana (@BlogPro). I think the Colombians will take this as they are hot favourites - but Ghana are very decent and could easily spring a shock.

--------------------------------
It's been a big tournament for fans of players being hit in the nads.

DAY 23 ROUND-UP

One of the great World Cup goals, scored by a team with one of the great World Cup stories.

Cabo Verde (@mnunes532) may be out, but they stood toe-to-toe with the world champions, forced them into extra time and utterly justified their place in these finals. Argentina (@sms_chief_of_messaging) are through - but definitely need a change of underwear.

Colombia (@Lifeisnotgood) join them after arguably the worst match of the World Cup so far. @BlogPro - your pain is over, and so is ours because Ghana are awful to watch.

Egypt (@onebink) are also through, needing penalties to get by Australia (@Guty) after another dull match. A Mo Salah panenka as well. If he'd tried that last season for Liverpool it probably would have killed someone in the Kop.

--------------------------------
So here's the draw for the stupidly named Round of 16:-

--------------------------------
And those matches start today with Canada (@Inesh) vs. Morocco (@Venusaur). Morocco have shown their semi-final run in 2022 was no fluke and the Canadians have lived up to home expectation. Should be a great game and I'm going for 2-2 and possibly penalties.

Surprise package Paraguay (@Salvad) have the unenviable task of facing a rampant France (@Cheyande). Their well-organised defence could keep the French at bay for a while but it's hard to see anything other than a France win. I'm going for 2-0.

--------------------------------
My god.

DAY 24 ROUND-UP

Congratulations to Paraguay (@Salvad) on a performance so pathetic that they might as well have worn a nappy out on to the pitch. France (@Cheyande) laughed at them, won 1-0, and Kylian Mbappe managed to escape without both legs broken.

Canada (@Inesh) froze in the spotlight and were outclassed in the second half by a very, very good Morocco (@Venusaur) side. 3-0 might have flattered them slightly but Canada could have played all night and not scored.

--------------------------
I may have come across as somewhat anti-England (@WinningLife) during this World Cup. But if you understood that I live within hearing distance of three pubs, and they are allowed to stay open until their match against Mexico (@Walterlo) is over, you can see why I'm not happy. Could be 4am with extra time and penalties. I hope Mexico win 17-1 - England will probably go through on penalties after a bore.

Brazil (@Fresh Money) vs. Norway (@thelightgame) though has the potential to be the match of the tournament. Haaland vs. Vini Jr. - and other players are playing, too. 2-2, I think, and Brazil to nick it in extra time.

--------------------------

DAY 24 ROUND-UP

Norway (@thelightgame) booked their place in the quarter-finals with a deserved win over Brazil (@Fresh Money). Erling Haaland took his international tally to 11,908 goals and I strongly advise that the Norwegian authorities wrap him in cotton wool before they play England. The highlight of this game, though, was Neymar crying. Again. The gift that keeps on giving.

Oh, and England (@WinningLife) beat Mexico (@Walterlo) 3-2, I believe.

-------------------------------
Today sees the USA take on Belgium (@Steptoe). In light of certain events surrounding the allowing of Balogun to play tonight, the entire world will now be cheering for Belgium. Except for @prey24, that is. I do think Belgium will win this though, possibly in extra time. Presumably the result will then be overturned and the World Cup handed to USA on the spot.

And we will also be treated to Portugal (@Rufai) vs. Spain (@Fransh). I expect this will be Cristiano Ronaldo's final match as I think Spain will win this 2-1, although I'm sure he could be brought off the bench in a mobility device for the next World Cup.

-------------------------------

Portugal is gonna win today.
They crawled their way to round of 16. They will crawl to quarterfinals too.

DAY 25 ROUND-UP

What I would say to @prey24 is that I'm not going to strike through your name on the opening page just yet. Because although USA lost 4-1 to Belgium (@Steptoe), I'd expect they'll find some way to overturn the result. Like the Belgians once said the word 'steroids' when they were 11 or something. Anyway, the Belgians are improving as the competition goes on and outplayed the Yanks comprehensively.

You can guarantee if I predict a game will be a banger that it will end up being an actual stinker. Spain (@Fransh) vs. Portugal (@Rufai) was such a game, and I did nod off at one point. But Spain squeezed through and Cristiano Ronaldo's World Cup dream is over. Back to the stat pad league with you, old thing.

----------------------------
The final two Round of 16 (ugh) games today see the impressive Colombians (@Lifeisnotgood) take on a very decent Switzerland (@Angelina.sk) team. Hard to call this one and I wouldn't be surprised if went to extra time, but I think the Swiss might squeeze through in extras or penalties.

And it's Messi vs. Salah as Argentina (@sms_chief_of_messaging) will be hoping for a much improved performance against Egypt (@onebink) after squeezing past Cabo Verde. I do think Argentina will take this one, maybe 2-0.
