hi guys,
I'm looking at an expired domain that's closely related to my niche (proxy/VPN space) and considering snapping it up for a 301 redirect to boost my main site. The name fits perfectly, but I'm a bit on the fence about its actual value.
I pulled the metrics from Ahrefs (screenshots attached) and here's what I'm seeing:
Appreciate any honest takes. Thanks!
- Domain Rating (DR): 32
- Backlinks: ~12K (87% ********)
- Referring Domains: ~2.6K (74% ********)
- Top referring pages include some high-DR sites (ranging from DR 73 up to 97) all within the proxy/web unblocking niche.
- Spammy Backlink Profile? The ratio of backlinks to referring domains feels off. Are these likely just low-quality PBN links or forum spam, given the sheer volume?
- Will the DR Tank? If I buy this domain, rebuild it with fresh, relevant content, and 301 redirect it, will this DR 32 hold up? Or is it likely to drop drastically as Google/ Ahrefs re-evaluates it under new ownership?
- The Risk of a Penalty: The topical relevance is there, but how likely is it that Google will just ignore or disavow these links automatically because of the volume/pattern?
Appreciate any honest takes. Thanks!
