Do local domain rules affect your projects?

I usually see people compare price, keywords, and availability when buying domains.

But recent discussion around .IN reminded me that ccTLD rules can be very different from .com. Some country-code domains may have local-use expectations or special registration terms.

For people building sites or buying domains for projects, do you check those rules first?

That's right; worth looking into those cTLDs restrictions first because some of them (.IN, .CA) actually have residency requirements which might limit the possibility o owning them or reselling them.
When it comes to projects, I generally use .com unless there is any good reason for using other domains.

I do, but mostly for the ones I know are picky. .EU burned me once... bought it through a registrar, then found out you need an EU presence to actually hold it, ended up scrambling for a workaround. .CA same deal with the residency thing.

For client projects I just check the registry page before pulling the trigger, takes 5 min and saves the headache later. .com still default for anything I might wanna flip though, resale market is just way cleaner.

One thing nobody mentioned... some ccTLDs look cheap on year one then renewal price jumps like crazy. .IO used to be a classic for that. always check renewal not just the reg price.

Yes. If you buy a local domain, from a local domain platform you will suffer from the requirements of that country.

the renewal trap is real and people sleep on it. i got bit by a .co years back, reg was like 5 bucks then renewal was 30+. now i always pull the full pricing page before buying anything thats not .com.

other thing worth checking is the dispute policy, some ccTLDs have weird rules where they can yank the domain if someone files a complaint or if your whois doesnt match local presence. .us has the nexus requirement too, technically you need to be a us entity or have real connection to the country. nobody checks until it bites them.

for flipping .com is still king though, agreed there. the secondary market for most ccTLDs is thin unless its one of the few that got adopted for branding like .io or .ai

This is a really good point. Dispute rules and residency requirements are definitely part of the bigger picture as well, not just the initial registration cost.

One thing that doesnt get mentioned much is grace period and redemption rules vary a lot between registries too. With .com you got the standard 30 day grace + redemption window if you forget to renew. Some ccTLDs the domain drops way faster or theres no real redemption at all, so if you miss the renewal someone can grab it almost instantly.

Also worth pulling the actual registry backend before buying, not just whatever your registrar shows. Some ccTLDs run their own backend with weird transfer locks, like you cant move the domain out for 60 days after reg or after a transfer. Annoying if your flipping.

one thing that gets overlooked is the actual registry backend behind some ccTLDs. you can check all the rules you want on the registrar page but a few of these run their own backend with transfer locks and clunky whois handling that you only find out about when you try to move the domain. learned that the hard way.

also depends what your doing with it. if its a real local business targeting that country, the ccTLD can actually help with trust and ranking in that region, so the restrictions are kinda just the cost of doing business. for anything you might wanna flip later... yeah .com all day, the resale market for most ccTLDs is too thin to bother.

the renewal jump thing is real though, .io was brutal for years. i always screenshot the full pricing before pulling the trigger now cause registrars love hiding that second year number.

one thing that hasnt come up, a lot of those residency-locked ones (.eu, .ca, .com.au etc) you can actually use a trustee/local presence service instead of scrambling for a workaround. registry sees a local admin contact, you stay the real owner. costs a bit yearly but cleaner than borrowing someones address.

also worth checking whois privacy availability before you buy, some ccTLDs just dont offer it or force your real details public by registry policy. learned that on a couple euro extensions where my name was sitting right there in the public record.

agree .com stays the safe default for anything you might flip, but for a real local project the trust bump in regional serps is usually worth eating the restrictions imo.

The second-year price part is real. First-year price gets all the attention, then renewal is where people get surprised.

Yep, local presence/trustee is usually cleaner than trying to bend the rules or borrow someone’s address.
