How many backlinks should a new website build per month?

Thread of idiotic bots posting same text from ChatGPT...

Why do you think about how many links you add per day per month, and I think about where I go to find external links?:weep::weep: help me!!!

I would like to ask experienced SEO members how many backlinks a new website should build each month to stay safe and still improve rankings. Since a new domain usually has low authority, building too many links too quickly might look unnatural to search engines.
Some people suggest starting with a small number of high-quality backlinks and increasing gradually, while others recommend building links more aggressively from the beginning.
What strategy do you usually follow for new websites? How many backlinks per month do you consider safe and effective for steady growth in rankings and traffic? It would be great to hear your experiences and suggestions.
There’s no fixed number, but for a new site it’s safer to start with a few high-quality, relevant backlinks each month and keep the growth natural. Focus on consistency over volume and increase gradually as your site builds authority.

Start small, safe is relative, keep it diverse and focus on a few strong links instead of many weak ones

There’s no fixed “safe” number. For a new site, start light with about 5–15 quality backlinks in the first month, then gradually increase to 20–50 per month. What matters is keeping the profile natural (anchors, link sources), not the raw number—do it right and scaling faster is fine; do it wrong and even a few links can hurt.

I usually separate “foundation noise” from real money links. First month I’ll do citations/profiles/socials/brand mentions, whatever makes the site look alive, then only a few actual contextual links to important pages. If the site has 8 pages, no traffic, no branded searches and suddenly 30 exact match anchors land on it... that’s the dumb footprint, not just the number. For fresh domains I’d rather do 3-6 decent contextual links, mostly brand/url anchors, then scale when content is indexed and getting some impressions. Also don’t point everything at the homepage forever, looks lazy.

never bombard the site with backlinks. sound natural. i think 5 to 10 backlinks a month is enough for a fresh website but only on relevant sites.

I don't think there's any one number that's "safe." Google doesn't count backlinks the way most people think it does. A new site could build just 5 high-quality links and outperform another site that's built 100 low-quality ones. What matters most is relevance, and the quality and the natural growth pattern of those links.

For new sites, I try to aim for a consistent flow of a few good links each month while content is regularly being posted. I would much rather acquire 5-10 niche links from legitimate sites than go after huge numbers. The truth is that, in most cases, the authority of the links and their topical relevance usually carry much more weight than the sheer number of backlinks.

@Ghost Root
Good knowledge ;) ;)

Putting a number tag on it is exactly the opposite of what "organic" should look like. If you build links in an exact pattern over time then it's a mjor footprint. I never put links submission on a calendar.

Personally, I would focus on getting the basics right first solid on page SEO and foundational links. Once thats in place, I would gradually build quality, niche relevant backlinks. I dont think bulk link building is the best approach for a brand new site.

Quality > quantity. Start with a few relevant, high-quality backlinks and grow naturally over time.

There is no fixed number of backlinks that is considered safe for every new website. I usually focus on Quality rather than quantity. For a new site even a few relevant and high quality backlinks each month can be enough to start building authority.

i build link based on opportunities not a fixed target .

No magic number. For a fresh site I’d start with 5-10 solid relevant links and scale only when the site is getting content and traffic too, forcing a monthly quota usually leads to buying junk.

Ok. Looks like its time to admit, that forums are doomed... Ppl just paste here answers provided by llm's so there is no point wasting time here and not just ask those questions to chatGPT, since the result will be same but without a middleman.
I understand your point, and AI has definitely changed how people share information online. But forums still have value because real experience, case studies, and discussions cannot always be replaced by AI answers. Sometimes the best insights come from people who have actually tested things in the real world. I think AI is a tool, while forums are still useful for learning from each other.

There is no fixed number of backlinks a new website should build each month. The most important thing is quality and natural growth.

For a new site, it’s better to start with a few good-quality backlinks and increase slowly over time.

As long as the links are relevant and natural, the number is not a big issue.
I agree with you. For a new website, focusing on quality backlinks is much better than chasing numbers. A few relevant and trusted links each month can make a bigger impact than building many low quality links. Natural growth always looks safer and more sustainable in the long run.

I agree with you. Getting the basics right first is always important, especially for a new site. Strong on-page SEO, proper site structure, and quality content create a solid foundation. After that, building niche-relevant backlinks gradually usually gives better long-term results than rushing with bulk links. In my experience, quality and relevance matter much more than quantity.
