You’ve probably heard of RMT (Real Money Trading) - making money from in-game currency, items, accounts, or services.

Some well-known examples are Path of Exile 1, Path of Exile 2, MapleStory, Aion, and various Korean MMORPGs.

I'm curious if there are any games nowadays where it's possible to semi-AFK or passively farm valuable items/currency that have actual RMT demand.

I'm not necessarily looking for the highest profit per hour, but rather games that:

  • Have an active RMT market
  • Allow long grinding sessions or passive progression
  • Can be managed alongside other activities
For those involved in RMT:

  • Which games are worth looking into right now?
  • Are there any newer titles with good economies?
  • What games have the best balance between effort and RMT potential?
Would appreciate any recommendations or experiences.

Im not directly into what you are describing here, but i do play alot of fc26, and on fc26 you could have a couple of accounts, and use a trading bot to trade for you and gain an x amount of coins per day, you can then turn around and sell those coins on p2p sites, usually 15 bucks per 1 million coins, the earlier into the game the more expensive it is tho,

mind you 1 million coins is not easy to get to even with a trading bot, and it is only REALLY profitable once you have 200-300 active accounts all farming.

There is also alot to it, if you have your own trading bot, you keep all coins, if you use a public one, you lose a percentage to the platform, EA can ban your accounts for not following their policy and then you need to replace etc etc.

Good luck.

From what I've seen, the biggest challenge isn't finding a game with RMT demand, it's finding one where the method remains profitable after everyone discovers it. Gamers are remarkably efficient at optimizing the fun out of games and then selling the leftovers.

A few games often mentioned in RMT discussions are Old School RuneScape, Path of Exile 2, World of Warcraft, and Albion Online because they have active player economies and consistent demand for currency, items, or services.

For semi-AFK play specifically, OSRS is probably the classic example due to skilling activities that require limited attention. Albion also gets mentioned because gathering and crafting can be done while multitasking.

The catch is that profit margins tend to shrink over time, and many games actively enforce rules against RMT. If your goal is income rather than gaming, it may be worth comparing the hourly return against other online work. A surprising number of players spend months building "passive" game farms only to discover they created a very low-paying job.

OSRS is still probably the boring answer if you want semi-afk + actual buyers. Not sexy, but demand never really dies. Albion can work too, but the moment you start scaling it gets annoying with bans, market swings, and guild/pvp stuff eating time. Newer MMOs usually look good for 2-4 weeks then economy gets nuked or gold price drops hard once the bot farms flood in. @kinose if you just wanna test without going crazy, I'd start with one account in OSRS or Albion and track actual sellable output for a week, not just “estimated profit” from guides... those are usually cope.

Yeah, I’ve been researching it, and I feel that OSRS meets those requirements. You seem to have a lot of experience, would it be okay if I DM you to ask a few more questions?
