Google.com results showing two different result sets for the same keyword?

I searched for a keyword today and was happy to find a client's website on page 1 result 1 for that keyword.

Then I told my bf about it, and he checked on google, he can't even see the website in the top 5 pages for the keyword.

We are both not logged into our google accounts, we are both using google.com and not using any filters but why different results?

I changed my IP and tried again, I am still getting page 1 result 1. Then I used a proxy server and this time like what my bf has mentioned, the website is nowhere near page 1 for the keyword.

Any explanation to this? Is google showing results based on IP or computer name?

Well, Google has been showing results based on IP for quite while (g00gle.com).

I found out that sometimes (for some reason) even when not logged into my accounts,
Google would show me similar results.
So I made sure that I had the right settings before doing some research.

But I changed my IP and confirmed my IP changed on whatismyip dot com. Still showing the same results.

So now google is tracking by computer name or something like that?

Have you cleared all your cookies?

Try using a different browser, that is what I do I have one browser that I use to double check rankings once in awhile and never click on any sites when I am using it.

if you're using firefox, press ctrl+shift+p to go in private browser, and go to google you'll get the real result

I cleared all my cache and cookies and now Google no longer shows the website on page 1 for the keyword.

Yes they are and have been for awhile now.

You are not on the first page. Every time you need to check your ranking, open a private session, that will give you the correct position.

depends on the country its searched from and also the region, google is improving search results due to lack of relevance
