Why are weak pages outranking my PBN+ guest post SEO stack?

Hey everyone,
i have tested a few pages where i used a mix of stronger backlinks (guest posts + PBN + contextual links) but some competitors with way fewer and weaker links are still outranking me.
Content is not even that much better on thier side which makes it more confusing.
It feels like links alone are not enough anymore or may be google is weighing trust/intent signals more heavily than raw link strength.
Has anyone else seen strong backlinks profiles lose to simpler setups recently?
Would love to hear what was actually working for scaling rankings in 2026.

More links don't automatically mean better rankings. I'd compare the top-ranking pages for intent, freshness, and overall user experience. Small advantages across multiple factors can outweigh a stronger backlink profile.

They look at the site first and then the links.

If they don’t like the site, they might not look at the links at all.

And not just the ranked pages but overall as well.

Yes, @tiiberius is right. Google calculates overall domain trust before it even looks at your link stack.

If your content is roughly the same as your competitor's, Google just defaults to the site it already trusts. You can blast all the PBNs and guest posts you want, but if your root domain lacks genuine authority, the algorithm just mutes those links.

Brute force linking does not work anymore. Build real trust at the root domain first, or those links will keep passing zero value.

strong link stacks do not always win anymore if the page is not fully matching intent of the site still lacks overall trust signals. in some cases, similar pages with better relevance or engagement can outrank heavier link profiles.

Many have observed that links become less important where users are not engaged. where users are inactive, google ranks high those pages where the intentions of the users are meet.

I have witnessed this firsthand too. It appears that in many of today's niches, factors such as relevance, user signals, and overall site trust hold more weight than the sheer strength of link building alone. The lesser-known site that fits search intent perfectly will outdo the other site

seen this too. strong link setups do not always win now if the page is not fully matching search intent or the domain lacks trust signal. sometimes simpler pages rank just because they fit the query better and get better engagement.

Not all of the links pass the same value. Because few high relevant links often beat a larger volume of generic links.

Agreed your point . Links still matter, but topical authority, user signals, and site trust seem to play a bigger role now. So we need to get some strong brands and trusted domains often need fewer links to compete.

Yes. I've seen pages with fewer links that win in SERP of better topical relevance and clean optimization.

Building topical clusters, improving internal linking, and getting highly relevant links seem to move the needle in serp more than just increasing the backlink volume.

If a website is developed comprehensively - with on-page, off-page, and technical optimization - verything will be fine. seen this happen recently. string backlinks still help but they do not guarantee rankings anymore. in some cases, competitors were matching search intent better, had stronger topical relevance or simply offered a better user experience. google seems to be looking at more than just link strength these days.
