How do you decide when a domain is “too old” to be useful?

I’ve come across some aged domains with strange history (different niches over time). Not sure if they’re still safe or useful for SEO.

What’s your personal rule for judging aged domains?

A domain created in 2025 and used to spam vietnamese casino links and weird porn websites is already too old

A domain created in 1990 and only used as the domain of a legit and authoritative brand is not old

I avoid domains that have jumped through multiple unrelated niches over the years.
Frequent topic changes often indicate previous abuse or recycled SEO use.

Age is a positive factor but abuse is a dead end. Aged domains work better than fresh ones but if they are used for spammy niches like pharma, they'll never rank again regardless of what you do. Google will apply 10x sandbox period and will always keep an eye on your website.

What niches were those? If it's apparently spammy, then it's something to avoid.

Go through my checklist that @tazarbm posted. Not too much has changed since I wrote that post and it's as good place to start as any.
