A few months ago I started experimenting with local AI models + basic web tools just as a side project to learn.

Ended up building a very simple “virtual girlfriend” style chatbot with:

  • memory
  • custom personality presets
  • voice replies
  • image reactions
  • basic mood system

Honestly I thought nobody would care, but some friends started using it daily and it turned into a pretty interesting learning experience.

Biggest surprise:
People seem way more attached to personality/interaction than realism.

I’m still improving:

  • response speed
  • memory consistency
  • more natural conversations
  • mobile UI

Curious if anyone else here is building weird AI side projects lately or testing local/self-hosted models.

Feels like AI companions are becoming a huge niche in 2026.

(Just sharing the experience, not selling anything.)

@UnusualSubstance might be needing your AI if things still don't change for him this year

You mind doing my buddy a solid and completing the build a bit quicker? : D

Anyways, good luck with your project

That's a cool project. It's wild how people are connecting with AI personalities even if the tech isn't super polished yet, and it's awesome you're riding that wave and learning along the way

Building a virtual girlfriend chatbot is a super cool project, and the fact that people are actually using it is a testament to the power of personality and interaction over hyper-realism, you're definitely onto something with the AI companion niche

low key you're building the beta format of future human relations in a more dynamic/imersive environment, When this reaches the level of live streams without AI glitching, it will be very interesting.

This is interesting project. Sometimes the projects we make for fun, result in turnkey money.
