There is a lot of talk that backlinks are becoming less important compared to user signals and content quality. For those doing white hat SEO, are backlinks still a core ranking factor, or is their influence slowly decreasing with recent algorithm updates?

Backlinks still matters a lot , but they are not as powerful alone as they used to be . Good content and real user engagement seem to carry more weight now . Links still help , just not to enough to rank without everything else in place.

Backlinks are still a strong ranking factor, but they don’t work in isolation anymore. If the content and user experience are weak, even good links won’t hold rankings for long.

Backlinks are still important in seo, but their role is changing. Google now focuses more on content quality and user experience. Good, relevant backlinks still help, but they must look natural and support useful, high quality content to work well.

Backlinks aren’t losing value, but their role is evolving. They’re still a core ranking factor, especially for competitive keywords, but Google is getting much better at evaluating quality, relevance, and intent rather than just counting links.

Content quality and user signals have become stronger, so backlinks alone won’t carry a page like before. But when you combine strong content with relevant, high quality links, that’s still what drives top rankings.

no they still matter a lot but quality beats quantity spam links dont help anymore google cares more about relevance and trust good backlinks still push rankings up fast

I have tried this before, backlinks still works but not in a way they used to be. I have a few pags with links but they didn't move untill I improve the content but once content is improved the same links which were already on the page start working and help the page rank.

Simple is that, links still matters but only with good content.

Backlinks are still a core element, but they're no longer as dominant as before. Google now looks more at content quality and user signals. Poor links are almost worthless, while relevant, natural links remain very powerful. For blogs/AI content, i find the most effective combination is useful content plus a few quality links, there's no need for excessive spamming.

I wouldn’t say backlinks are losing importance, they’re just being evaluated differently. Spammy or irrelevant links don’t work like before, but high quality, niche relevant backlinks still move the needle. The real shift is that content and engagement now amplify the effect of links.

Backlinks are not losing value, but they are not enough alone now, you still need good content and user signals to rank well.

Backlinks have not diminished in importance, but their quality has become more important. Weak or spammy links now do more harm than good. Links from authority and relevant sites provide more value. Content and user intent are now as important as backlinks.

backlinks which have good content and have high quality are only one matters.

SEO is evolving. It has always been. Natural links and niche links still carry a lot of importance.

Backlinks are still a core pillar, but quality and niche relevancy now matter far more than sheer quantity. While user signals and content quality help with retention, strong links remain the primary way Google validates your site's authority and trust in 2026.

Backlinks aren’t losing value Google is just getting better at ignoring weak or irrelevant ones. High-quality, contextually relevant links still have a huge impact on trust and authority. Content and user signals matter more than before, but links remain a core part of the ranking system. It’s no longer about volume, it’s about meaningful links that actually make sense.

In my opinion,
While backlinks still matter, having fewer high-quality, relevant links is better than having many low-quality ones.

Backlinks aren't dying, but the "cheap" ones definitely are.

Think of it this way: years ago, any link was a vote. Today, Google only cares who is doing the voting. If a respected site in your niche links to you, it’s a massive win. If 500 random, unrelated sites link to you, Google usually just ignores them, or worse, flags them as spam.

The shift in a nutshell:
  • Relevance is king: A link from a tiny blog in your specific field is worth more than a link from a giant site that has nothing to do with you.
  • Quality wins: You can't just buy a pack of 1,000 links and expect to rank anymore.
  • Trust factor: Google uses links to see if you’re a real authority. If no one is talking about you, it’s hard to get to page one.
The verdict: Don't stop getting links, but stop worrying about the count. Focus on getting mentioned by people who actually matter in your industry.

Backlinks still matter, but not like before. From my experience, quality beats quantity now-few strong, relevant links work better than many random ones. Google is focusing more on content and user signals, but links still help build trust. So don't ignore them, just focus on getting clean, relevant backlinks.

Bcaklinks plays a crucial role even now a days but quality of sites their Domain rating and domain authority matters so you have to be careful while purchasing backlinks.
