domain stolen by indonesian casino

i forgot to renew a domain. the domain has zero value. it has no backlinks. it doesn't rank for anything.
the domain, and its website content, were completely unrelated to casinos (let say it was about how to plant potatoes. zero relation to casinos)
i just checked and the content on it is some bullshit indonesian casino stuff.
why would they steal my domain instead of registering their own domain?
i know it's not stealing since i am the one who let it expire. but why do they prefer my domain howtoplantpotatoes.com for a casino?

As far as I know the method isn't nearly as effective as it used to be, but for a casino spam site longevity isn't really the goal, just one paying customer is a huge ROI.

Track it and see what they do with it, you might be able to uncover a few tricks here and there. I personally love checking back on domains I've let expire, as I've usually squeezed every drop of worth out of them as I can. There's always more to learn.

Bots buy them. I had a similar bot a few years ago and this was the purpose. But I don't think it's still worth it if you're not running big operations like some of those casino guys

Had something similar happen with a forum.. a hacker left a few signatures that could be traced to indonesia via github on the server. We tried to contact them and got nothing. The site owner was so devastated by everything they just checked out for a few months and lost the domain that had been around since 2004

Sometimes they register expired domains in bulk without caring much about the previous niche They may hope the domain still has some age trust or leftover traffic Even if it has little value to you it can still be useful as part of a larger network for them

Yeah @don6644 like some of the guys already mentioned, it mostly comes down to indexing. Right now getting a brand new domain indexed is a total nightmare, google sandboxes fresh domains for weeks or months. Even if your potato site had zero links, the fact that google already knew the domain existed means their spam pages get indexed almost instantly. They just run automated scripts to auto-buy anything dropping, throw up the casino template, and scrape whatever traffic they can get before the domain gets burned... its just cheap throwaway real estate for them.
