I've been testing white hat SEO strategies and noticed that building strong topical clusters sometimes works better than traditional backlink building.
For experienced SEOs, do you think google is now prioritizing topical authority over backlinks?
Or is a balanced approach still the key?

both matter but topical authority is becoming more important. sites covering topics deeply and coherently gets rewarded more consistently than another with scattered highDA backlinks

they look for the EEAT signals which are author expertise, content depth and freshness.

backlinks still matter but they are less about raw DA and more about the relevance of the linking domain.

build the content first and make it really good so that others will want to link to you.

Yeah, topical authority is getting more important, but backlinks still matter. From what I've seen, Google likes sites that really cover a topic well, showing you’re an expert. But backlinks still help with ranking, so it’s not like they don’t count. Honestly, a mix of both seems to be the best way to go.

Topical Authority = Determines whether you can "get in the game."
External Links = Determines whether you can "win."
Both are crucial.

It's still a mix, but your observation about topical authority sometimes outperforming backlinks is spot on. Google's obviously getting way better at understanding real content expertise, so that deep cluster work is definitely pulling its weight more these days

Topical authority is having a major moment and can really move the needle, but let's be real, a few solid backlinks are still kinda essential for that extra sparkle, right

From what I’ve seen, relying on just one approach rarely works long term. Building strong topical clusters can definitely help establish authority, but backlinks still play an important role in validating that authority.

Topical authority is definitely hitting harder now but backlinks haven’t gone anywhere.
Think of it like this: topical clusters build trust and relevance, while backlinks still act as votes of credibility.
If you had to pick, clusters can move the needle faster today but long-term, the real winners are still using both together.

Topical authority is getting more important now, but backlinks still matter. If your content covers a topic deeply, it ranks better. Still, good backlinks help build trust, so a balanced approach works best.

I think topical authority helps a lot, but backlinks are still important. Best results probably come from using both together.

Yeah, I think topical authority is getting more important now. Google is really focusing on content relevance and depth. If your site shows expertise in a specific topic with well-organized content, it can rank well even without a ton of backlinks. But backlinks still matter, especially for building trust and authority. So, a balanced approach, where you combine both strong topical authority and quality backlinks, is probably still the best way to go.

From what I’ve seen, topical authority is becoming more important, especially after recent Google updates. When a site covers a topic deeply with strong internal linking and content clusters, it definitely helps with rankings.
That said, backlinks still play a big role in building trust and authority. Even the best content clusters can struggle to rank without some quality links pointing to them. So in my opinion, the best strategy is still a balanced approach — build strong topical coverage first, then support it with relevant backlinks.

Yes I think topical authority feels more important, but not a replacement . from my experience If your site covers a topic deeply with proper structure, it ranks faster even with fewer links.

Yes I think topical authority matters more now for ranking, but backlinks still help, best results usually come when you build strong content around a niche and support it with some quality links.

Topical authority is important, but backlinks still matter, balance is best.

Definitely getting those vibes too! It feels like google's just way smarter about actual expertise these days, so crushing it with super relevant, in-depth content probably just speaks louder than a bunch of links, even if both are probably still part of the bigger picture.

Yeah I think topical authority definitely helps more than before but backlinks still matter a lot best results come from doing both rather than only one.

Honestly, in 2026 topical authority feels more important than just backlinks covering a topic deeply with helpful content often helps you rank even without a huge link profile, but backlinks still matter especially in competitive niches, so the best play is a mix of both.
