People start somewhere, and often it is in a moderated thread like this one.

They learn, they share, and their post account goes up.

It's generally a normal and natural progression.

Messages posted in the lounge do not count as they are not usually IM-related but rather social interaction between community members.

If you want to start a direct message, you need to have at least 15 posts, otherwise you will not see the option to start a new direct message. Make sure your posts are good quality and do not make short, spammy or low-quality posts just to boost your post count - these posts will be deleted and your account may be banned.

When you reach 15 posts, you will see a yellow button appear at the top of your inbox with "Start Direct Message" - this allows you to send a message to another member.

You will also see the option to 'Start direct message' in the pop up window when you click on another user's name.

If you have a post count of less than 15 on the forum, you will not be able to start a direct message with other members.

You should, however, be able to receive direct messages (sometimes referred to as PMs/DMs/Conversations) and respond to them.
