Did you checked for inner pages/paths backlinks? Some times inner pages have more links and authority than the homepage....if you didn't just redirect all 404 to homepage and you should be fine.

It all depends. For example, if the new content has no clear connection to the old content, Google might not trust the site as much. But if the old content had links and relevance, it can certainly help. Mixing it with new content on separate paths doesn't always transfer authority well. It usually works better to maintain consistency and structure everything under the same logic, not like two different sites within one.
