That's a good point. Starting with white hat strategies like content and solid on-page SEO does seem safer for beginners. Do you think combining that with a few experimental methods could still be worth testing?
 
Most free seo advice is empty. If I were starting from scratch, I'd keep it simple: take low-competition keywords with clear intent, look at what's actually ranking well and replicate them, and build a small cluster of related pages instead of just one.
Beginners usually go straight for links, but without a proper structure, even good links are of little use. A small but well-built website easily outperforms large sites with chaotic content. When you have a solid foundation, then links really start working.

If you're just starting out, the best ROI you will get is setting up an automated tier 2 structure. Direct to money site black hat is mostly dead now because the indexation rate drops to zero fast. I run campaigns where I strictly point automated links at my safe tier 1s. To get a decent VPM and not waste your time you will need a good target list though. I wouldn't bother scraping your own starting out. I usually rotate between AVS, Serverifiedlists, and GSA Verified List depending on the project budget. Just keep your proxy threads reasonable and you will see a solid bump in your main rankings within a few weeks.

That's a fair point. the risk definitely seems higher now compared to before. I guess testing carefully and not relying completely on black hat methods might be the safer approach.
